Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has alleged that some individuals within the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) are working in support of the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, ahead of the 2027 election.
Lawal made the allegation in a statement posted on his official Facebook page on Monday while reacting to reports that some NDC governorship candidates in the North-East had rejected his appointment as the party’s leader in the region.
The former SGF, who recently joined the NDC, accused the Adamawa State governorship candidate of the party, Aisha Binani, of being behind the opposition to his appointment, alleging that she was supporting Atiku instead of the NDC presidential ticket of Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso.
Lawal described the reported protest by the governorship candidates as a “charade” and said he was not concerned by the development.
“My attention has been drawn to a trending story on social media to the effect that six so-called gubernatorial candidates of the Nigeria Democratic Congress are protesting my joining the party and my appointment as the leader of the party in the North-Eastern Zone of the party.
“I have it on good authority that the charade is being led and organised by a female pretender to the governorship candidacy of Adamawa State,” he wrote.
Lawal said the matter was for the national leadership of the party to handle, adding that he accepted the appointment as a mark of respect to NDC leaders.
He claimed that the disagreement would not affect the party’s direction ahead of the 2027 election, insisting that Nigerians had no alternative to Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso.
The former SGF also warned that individuals he described as “moles” would not have a role in the party’s activities.
“There would be no alteration of results in the 2027 polls. The moles will be rendered redundant,” he said.
Lawal further disclosed that some NDC governorship candidates in Gombe and Taraba states had contacted him to distance themselves from the statement rejecting his appointment.
