By Daniel ChibuikeAba Power PLC has suspended the restoration of electricity in Ukwa West LGA. It blamed the decision on persistent vandalism, which it said has continued to disrupt power infrastructure in the area.
The company’s Head of Technical, Simeon Akpata, who made this known while speaking to journalists, lamented that despite efforts to reconnect Ukwa West, vandals have repeatedly sabotaged the work, thereby making it hard for sustained power supply.
“As of last week, while we were installing conductors, vandals struck again— just within 70 spans, nearly a kilometer of power lines was stolen,” he revealed.
“At this point, we had to stop the project because it makes no sense to continue if this is the reality,” he said.
He disclosed that more than about 73 transformers within Aba township were vandalized in the past year alone, recalling how the vandalization threw an entire area into darkness.
The power company appealed to security agencies and concerned stakeholders to take immediate action to protect the power installations.
But the suspension of power restoration efforts in Ukwa has attracted condemnation from many indigenes of Ukwa West, an oil producing area.
Some of the indigenes, including Ekeke Simeon, Nwogu Everest and Nwanyieze Chisaokwu expressed surprise at the decisions of Aba Power to leave their area in darkness.
The Ukwa West people said it was insensitive that an oil producing area, from which the Power company source part of its gas supply for its turbines, would be abandoned to remain in blackout.
