Victor Osimhen is 6th Nigerian to play for Galatasaray, see first five

By Ernest Victor

Super Eagles of Nigeria forward Victor Osimhen is the sixth Nigerian to represent the Turkish club Galatasaray after completing his move to the club from Napoli on loan.

Recall that Victor Osimhen’s transfer generated significant buzz during the summer window as he sought to depart Napoli despite signing a new contract in December 2023, which ought to keep him there until June 30, 2026.

Victor Osimhen made a considerable impact at Napoli since his transfer from Lille in 2020. His prolific goal-scoring prowess played a pivotal role in guiding Napoli to their first league title in over three decades.

During the 2022-2023 season, which was his best campaign at Napoli, the 25-year-old Nigerian striker scored 26 goals and earned the Serie A top scorer award, solidifying his status as one of the most sought-after strikers in Europe.

A host of top clubs, including Chelsea, Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United, and Liverpool, expressed interest in the talented Lagos-born striker.

Despite strong interest from Chelsea and a tempting offer from Saudi Arabian club Al-Ahli, Osimhen ultimately chose to join Galatasaray on loan.

Upon his arrival in Turkey, Osimhen was greeted with enthusiasm by thousands of Galatasaray supporters, eager to see him don the iconic club jersey.

His transfer situation has now been resolved until at least January, and he aims to replicate the stellar performances that propelled Napoli to Italian league success during the 2022/23 season.

How many Nigerian players have played for Galatasaray?

Victor Osimhen’s arrival adds further Nigerian representation to Galatasaray, a tradition that began with retired Eagles striker Dominic Iorfa. Iorfa spent a brief yet memorable eight months at the club in 1992, scoring three goals in nine games.

Following a substantial 26-year gap, Henry Onyekuru joined Galatasaray from Everton in 2018, establishing himself as the most successful Nigerian player to have worn their colours.

Onyekuru scored 22 goals and provided 12 assists in 71 appearances for Galatasaray, aiding the club in securing the Turkish Super Lig and the League Cup.

Shortly thereafter, Valentine Ozornwafor made the move to Galatasaray from Nigeria Premier Football League club Enyimba in 2019. Despite high expectations, Ozornwafor struggled to leave a lasting impression in Turkey, making only one appearance for the club during his three-year tenure.

Oghenekaro Etebo and Jesse Sekidika also joined Galatasaray in 2020, with Etebo making 29 appearances and Sekidika featuring 19 times and scoring a goal during their short yet impactful stints.

With the addition of Victor Osimhen, the Galatasaray faithful can once again savour the unmistakable Nigerian influence within their team.
