By Muhammed HammedA Nigerian man has expressed his frustration over what he perceives as widespread corruption in Nigeria, sharing a troubling experience with a gateman at an embassy while trying to obtain his visa.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he lamented that “every Nigerian is corrupt,” recounting how the gateman at the embassy delayed him without explanation. He had been invited to the embassy by the government it represents, but upon arrival, he faced unexpected obstacles at the gate.
Despite having all his details verified, the gateman refused him entry, leaving him waiting for nearly an hour.
The man noted that his colleagues on the inside informed him that the consular was waiting for him, yet the gateman still did not allow him in.
Eventually, the consular came outside to find out what was taking so long.
The consular expressed surprise at the situation, saying, “What have you been doing here? I have been waiting for you inside.”
When the man explained the delay, the gateman suddenly changed his demeanor, claiming it was because he knew the consular was busy. The man reflected, “Imagine! A gateman with a little power! Hmmm!”
The consular reassured him that he was not at fault for the delay, adding, “You’re lucky I came out.”
Ultimately, the man received his visa, remarking on the situation, “In this country, it’s all about who has power. May we be redeemed!”
His post sparked a wave of comments from concerned individuals sharing their thoughts on the matter.
See some reactions below:
@MBirninkudu: “When leaders are bad, do you expect the followers to be good? Let us have good leaders, you will wonder how most of these issues will disappear suddenly.”
@elyaa_seen: “I’ve learnt a lot through my job as it requires dealing with multiple stakeholders (customers inclusive). I’ve said it several times that, a typical Nigerian isn’t different from what we know. Like you said, “top-down”. Neither the elites nor the common man. Only few exceptions.”
@unAmravel: “A friend got the same treatment. Submitted his application at the embassy rather than going through vfs. Guess it didnt sit well with the people as they only prefer agents to make submissions. He couldnt make the trip because they held him down til last hour.”
@Abdullmubaarak: “Lol experienced this too??. While visiting my mentor his secretary said I should wait outside, that’s how I called the boss and he came out and hugged me shake hands and walked into the office Infront of the secretary.”
@OluwaViolence: “Omo of my guy was in this shoe last week in Russian embassy. …Las Las den collect 50k before he get access. Then Don give an visa sha. Nigerians get problem that needs urgent attention honestly.”
@Usman_Skura: “But what made the citizens corrupt are the leaders of by any means they are doing what is expected of them things won’t be this bad.”
@Bebef8m: “We are not the same. Don’t put this rascality on me! Y’all make silly personal and political decisions, explain crimes away as mistakes and then say we are all the same. Who be we?”
