NIGERIA "ARRIVES" AT GOLD....OCTOBER 1ST
he jubilee journey has been "jumpy" and "bumpy." This "Giant" is on a global stage. Eyes, ears, and mouths are all on this country of 150 million people... the most populous nation in Africa. On the path to the Golden Jubilee, pause and ponder on some national treasures... "JUBILEE JEWELS"
Ndoki Kwe nu (Greetings to the people of Ndoki in Abia state, Nigeria)
This wrapper business is the pride of Eastern Nigeria. It is a trade that has existed since the nineteenth century between the people of Akwete and the Ijaws of the Niger Delta region. Akwete Cloth is a Jubilee jewel because it has put Nigeria on the international cloth weaving and textile industry map. The rich cultural heritage embodied in the handwork and creativity of the women of Akwete undoubtedly shows that we are a nation of "gifted hands".
Akwete Cloth is still very popular today. It has undergone some improvements from the heavy cotton thread to a lighter silver thread which has produced a more "manageable" wrapper. It is a beautiful work of art to behold. This "up and down" wrapper for special occasions has been passed from generation to generation. Women and men have adorned themselves with it and even children have scrambled for the old ones to use as a blanket and "bedtime wrapper."
Akwete Cloth is a Jubilee Jewel because it celebrates our creativity....Made in Nigeria.
