n their adopted home city of Tangiers, Morocco, the "Lone Stars" of Liberia, were once again dominated by the Super Eagles of Nigeria, with a similar score of 2-0, as in the first leg in Lagos, two months ago.
The Super Eagles were not impressive in victory though! There were less cohesive as a team; and were more individualistic in their performance than collective as a team! They were so much inefficiencies/ inaccuracies in their performance, that one got the impression they were a hurriedly assembled team! They once again showed one of their weaknesses : inability to create chances against a compact-playing team. Or inability to create chances against a tightly defensive team, like the Liberians exhibited in the match.
This is where creativity comes in. The present set of Super Eagles come somewhat short of the required standards in this regard, for a team with their kind of ambitions! To help ameliorate this deficiency, Coach Rohr, makes them play together as a strong team, where the lack of individual top performers, is compensated by a strongly playing team. A team that plays as a real team! But in the case of the Super Eagles, in their second encounter against the Liberians, that strong team performance, was missing. And coupled with their lack of top performing players, we saw a Super Eagles that had difficulties breaking down a weak team like the Liberians.
Going forward, even to their last group's game against Cape Verde, the Super Eagles need to vastly improve their performance, to be sure of winning the group and getting the sole group's ticket for the final World cup eliminator, Africa zone. This is doable given the Super Eagles' antecedents!
However, notwithstanding the above-stated remarks about their performance, one would not deny the Super Eagles, the deserved credit on their hard-earned victory against the Liberians, in Tangiers, Morocco. Even if they didn't play their best match, they were at least efficient, by getting the deserved victory, and the concomitant three points to stay on top of their group!
Soccer-technically, how did the game go ?
The Super Eagles played with the same formation: 3-5-2 and the same 'philosophy', as in the match against Central Africa Republic, in Douala, Cameroun, on October 10, 2021.
Coach Rohr, predictably, kept faith with the same team and - formation that defeated Central Africa Republic, in Douala. He only replaced, Frank Onyeaka, with Wilfred Ndidi; and replaced Skipper Ahmed Musa, with Alex Iwobi, in comparison to the team that represented Nigeria, in Douala, Cameroun, last month.
These substitutions were not immediately 'bingo' for the Super Eagles, as the 'new' players had difficulties rising up to the occasion! They later on re-adjusted to the game.
And the actors for the Super Eagles in the match?:
Goalkeeper Maduka Okoye, put up a commanding performance, the few times he was called to action.
The three-man defence of : Chidozie Awaziem, Stand-in Skipper William Troost-Ekong and Leon Balogun, were collectively good. And helped keep the Liberians off Goalkeeper Okoye, for greater periods of the game. But one noticed slip-ups, with regards the individual performances of William Troost-Ekong and Leon Balogun. These should be avoided in the final cracker against Cape Verde, in Lagos.
The five-man mid-field were better defensively and less efficient with regards creating chances, as earlier stated. However, kudos to : Wilfred Ndidi, Jamilu Collins, Alex Iwobi, Joseph Oluwasemi Ayodele Aribo and Simon Moses.
Kelechi Iheancho and Victor Osimhen , as the strikers' duo, were one of the light points of the Super Eagles' performance! Kelechi Iheanacho, brought about the penalty for the first goal ; which was expertly converted by Victor Osimhen. Victor Oshimen, in turn, brought about the penalty for the second goal, which was expertly converted by substitute Skipper Ahmed Musa!
In conclusion, congratulations to the Super Eagles for their hard-earned and deserved victory against Liberia. Notwithstanding the short comings in their performance, they were the better side!
In the final cracker against Cape Verde in Lagos, the Super Eagles should take it like a "Cup Final", and leave no stone unturned to roundly defeat the Cape Verdians and get the group's ticket as the group's winners in style.
One believes this is doable !
UP SUPER EAGLES ! UP NIGERIA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
