"Victory nowadays in soccer, generally, don't happen through accidental/ coincidental happenstance, but through carefully articulated plans/policies, that are first of all made in the boardroom of the FA; before that can be translated through the coaches to the players on the soccer pitch." - Cyril C. Nwokeji
he drawn game against Brazil, by the Super Eagles of Nigeria, feels like a match won by the Super Eagles! The Brazilians are certainly the best in soccer on the planet; notwithstanding the fact they never win all World cup competitions. No team does anyway. Nobody wins all the time. However, taking into consideration the way Brazilians play soccer, the kind of talented players they have produced and are still producing; and the fact they have won the World cup more times than any other country on earth, makes one come to the conclusion that they are the best in soccer on planet earth! So a good result against a team like Brazil, with it's usual array of highly talented players; and as a matter of fact with the full complement of these great talents, against a more or else experimental Super Eagles team, lacking about six regular players, makes the Super Eagles' feat all the more spectacular!!!!!!
The match ended 1-1. The Super Eagles were quite impressive on that day!
How did yours sincerely see the match?
One saw a Super Eagles team that played in 4-5-1 formation. They played with four defenders, five mid-fielders and one deep striker or centre-forward. A tactical defensive formation thus! Coach Rohr realised the need to play the Brazilians, given their class, from the point of view of "containing" them and then to try to get at them through fast counters, exploiting the Super Eagles' traditional attacking methodology: the use of quick wingers!
Thus, in his game plans' philosophy, he used a 'jam- packed' mid-field organisation that made room for the traditional Super Eagles wingers; but this time around, he, apparently, told the wingers to operate from the mid-field. Or, rather, to use the mid-field as their 'launching base' for their offensive forays into the Brazilian territory. By so doing, he killed two birds with one stone thus: he 'jam- packed' the mid-field with five players and, thus, made life difficult for the Brazilians, who then had difficulties finding space to operate and, consequently, had difficulties penetrating Nigeria's defence; at the same time, he made it possible for the wingers who were part of the mid-field organisation, to use the mid-field as their launching base for their 'raids' in the Brazilian territory! The traditional/ conventional wingers, functioned in this highly tactical formation as "peudo wingers"! They played deep in mid-field when the Super Eagles were under pressure, and burst into life as pseudo wingers/conventional wingers, when the Super Eagles needed to attack!
The above stated tactical formation of the Super Eagles against Brazil, once again proves Coach Rohr's a tactically sound coach! He is by no means perfect as a coach, but is sufficiently tactically sound to coach the Super Eagles, at least till the 2022 World cup competition! We shall talk about this at the end of the article.
The players? They all did well ; even the substitute players did well. Through the team's determination and courage, the absence of the six regulars was not felt. A big kudos to them !!!!!! The match also showed the team's goalkeeping problems, may well be over, as the two keepers on display on that day, did well.
The defence showed some lapses with regards defending set-pieces, which Coach Rohr noticed, and will certainly improve on in subsequent matches.
The mid-field held stand against the ball artists from Brazil! Notwithstanding having seventy percent ball possession, the Brazilians couldn't disorganise the Nigerians!!!!
The highly 'compromised' offensive impulses in the 4-5-1 formation of Coach Rohr, showed a lot of guts and gave the Brazilians problems, particularly through the wings.
In conclusion, the Super Eagles showed they have lots of potentials! And given the right developmental environment, can shoot for the stars! One way to realising this objective, is to retain Coach Rohr at least till 2022. By the 2022 World cup competition, with Coach Rohr in charge, the Super Eagles would have spent six years as a team under Coach Rohr's tutelage; the players would have developed further in their individual careers, a fact which Coach Rohr stimulates by even encouraging the players to gradually move to more competitive leagues. At this point in time, all things being equal, the Super Eagles would be ready to take the soccer world by storm, and at the very least, equal or advance Africa's best performance at the World cup competition! This is achievable. It, thus, behoves on the NFF to do the right thing for the Super Eagles of Nigeria; and, consequently, for Nigerians and Nigeria!
UP SUPER EAGLES! UP NIGERIA!!!!!!!!
