ADIEU ISAAC PROMISE!

n Cote D' Ivorian friend of mine told me a few days ago he read on the internet of the passing of a Nigerian soccer player. He knew that as a soccer enthusiast the news would excite my curiousity. My heart of course missed a beat, when he couldn't furnish me with the necessary details. I decided at the earliest opportunity, to check out the information on the world wide net.

To my consternation it was indeed news of the passing of Isaac Promise, the erstwhile skipper of the under-17, - 20 and - 23 national teams! His passing is indeed a great blow to the Nigerian soccer family!

Yours sincerely first noticed Isaac Promise, when he was the skipper of the Nigerian Under-20 team, the Flying Eagles, at the Under-20 World cup tournament in the Netherlands, in 2005. He led a highly talented team that almost became world champions in their category; save for the geniality of the mercurial Lionel Messi of Argentina, that 'robbed' them of victory in the final.

Needless saying the then Skipper Isaac Promise, played a pivotal role in the Flying Eagles' success, at the tournament. He played in the offensive mid-field department, and together with John Obi Mikel, ensured the team wasn't short of the needed creativity. Creativity that brought many a goal at that tournament for the Flying Eagles and nearly made them World Under-20 Champions! In the final match they lost to Argentina, the Flying Eagles gave a very good account of themselves; and Isaac Promise, was one of the players that made the Flying Eagles tick!

Indeed it was a great Flying Eagles' team that had the likes of :

Goalkeeper Ambrose Vansakin(the goalkeeper that always kept the rosary in his goal area!). The defenders were: The late Adefemi Olubayo, of blessed memory, at right-back; Taiye Taiwo, at left-back; Onyekachi Apam, at centre-half back and Dele Adeleye, at left-half back.

The three-man midfield had: One defensive mid-fielder, who then plied his trade with RFC Genk football club of Belgium, whose name has escaped my memory. And of course Skipper Isaac Promise and John Obi Mikel, in the offensive mid-field positions.

The offensive players were : David Abwo, the right winger; John Owoeri, the left winger and Chinedu Obasi Ogbuke, centre-forward.

They were brilliant in their 4-3-3 formation and then Skipper Isaac Promise was a brilliant integral part of the team! Who with his energetic, quintessential, dazzling displays, shone like a million starts and helped pilot the team that far in that tournament!

He was also super as skipper of the under-23 team, at the 2008 Beijing Olympic games. His efforts helped pilot the team to yet another confrontation between Nigeria and Argentina, in the final match-up of the 2008 Olympic games! The Flying Eagles lost yet again to the special brilliance, geniality and quintessence of the Lionel Messi- inspired Argentinian team!

Isaac Promise, subsequently, had his efforts crowed with a call-up to the Super Eagles team, under then mentorship of Coach Samson Sia Sia; and, subsequently, made his debut as a Super Eagle. To become one of a few players that have represented Nigeria, at all levels of men's soccer!!!!

Isaac Promise's death is certainly a big blow not only to the Nigeria soccer family, but to the nation as a whole!

My sincere condolences to his wife, children and family. May the good Lord take his soul to his bosom. Amen !!!!!
