he goalless draw outing against the hosts : The "Wasps" of Rwanda, was to say the least, a very fortuitous result for the home team; want for all of ninety minutes, the hosts only took one decent shot at the Nigerian goal. A shot taken from a distance; not from a defence-splitting move! In other words, the hosts were roundly beaten in all departments of the game, by the dominant Super Eagles, flounting their their new-found "expansive soccer" under Coach Augustine Eguavoen. They ran all over the place trying desperately to hold the superior Super Eagles of Nigeria at bay. And at the end of the game, they were visibly relieved they got something from the match. And undeserved something, in your's sincerely's considered opinion. They should more especially thank their fantastic goalkeeper who kept them in the game; and their very tenacious defensive style!
That the Super Eagles belong to another level than the Rwandese was clear for all to see. Even the Rwandan President: Paul Kagame, saw it all himself, first hand as a spectator in the match. It was a dominant display by the Super Eagles for the entire duration of the match. The result didn't do justice to the run of play. Well, that's soccer for you.
Worthy of mentioning is the cancellation of what was in your's sincerely's considered opinion, a decent header of a goal by Ademola Lookman! The introduction of the VAR in the AFCON qualifiers would certainly be a conditio sine qua non for avoiding such unfortunate scenarios, because of the likely implications of cancelling good goals scored by teams. The Super Eagles lined-up in the same pattern as in the match against the "Cheetahs" of Benin, in Uyo, three days prior. Coach Eguavoen used the same players, except replacing Alex Iwobi with Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, in offensive mid-field. The players as a consequence of their dominant, expansive display, logically, all played well. Although there were vagaries in player's performance. Notwithstanding, they all played well generally. One major difference between Coach Augustine Eguavoen's style of 3-4-3 and Coach Peseiro's, is that in Coach Augustine Eguavoen's style, he makes the players attack more, while maintaining defensive stability. In other words, he plays classical 3-4-3 formation. While Coach Peseiro, in his obsession for defensive soccer, compelled the players not to be too adventurous and as a conquence, with time, the initially 3-4-3 formation 'deteriorated' to 5-2-3 or 5-3-2 : an ultra-defensive formation! In conclusion: Coach Augustine Eguavoen and the technical crew, have done a good job thus far; even in difficult circumstances as already discussed. The most sensible and logical thing to do is to let him at the very least, finish the AFCON qualifiers and then his performance would be evaluated. One hopes that in the circumstances, the NFF would be guided by nothing else than reason! UP SUPER EAGLES ! UP NIGERIA !!!!!!!
