SUPER EAGLES OF NIGERIA GRIND OUT A DIFFICULT VICTORY IN CAPE VERDE!

"The Super Eagles of Nigeria, have a bright future and can realise their immediate and long term ambitions, given the correct developmental environment." Cyril C. Nwokeji

"The retention of Coach Gernot Rohr, at least till 2022, is a conditio sine qua non for the Super Eagles of Nigeria to take the soccer world by storm, at the Qatar 2022 World cup competition." Cyril C. Nwokeji

t was without a shadow of doubt, a difficult , if not even a very difficult victory for the Super Eagles of Nigeria, in Cape Verde!

The victory was made difficult by the following factors: the loss of ten (more) regular players, due to Covid-19 pandemic- related problems, prompting the use of two debutants, in such a vital game, something Coach Rohr would never have done under normal circumstances ; the fact of having just two days of training to compensate for their absence; and having to play the hosts on a synthetic pitch, which most of the players are not used to.

However, despite those limiting circumstances, the technical crew under leadership of Coach Gernot Rohr, and, the players, were determined to do well. Coach Rohr even said the limiting circumstances couldn't be used as an excuse for an eventual under- performance!

It was with this positive mind set notwithstanding the very limiting circumstances that the Super Eagles of Nigeria approached the match in Cape Verde.

They played in a 4-4-2 formation, however, unlike in the match against Liberia, the formation had a slightly more offensive orientation, with the use of "offensive wing mid-fielders"/ "pseudo wingers".

Goalkeeper Maduka Okoye was in goal; and, generally, had a good showing, save for the first goal, where he showed slightly weak reflexes. My observation is no criticism, but an observation aimed at making him a great goalkeeper, which he is destined to be.

The defence line stared: Shehu Abdullahi, alias "Man -O- War", at right-back. He had a good game. But could have done better for the first goal to Cape verde.

Jamilu Collins, at left-back, had a fantastic game. His cross(assist) resulted in Nigeria's first goal.

"Field Marshal " Kenneth Omeruo, was solid as defence marshal, at centre-half back. And ably assisted by Chidozie Awaziem, at left-half back, who also had a good game. One must confess he has developed very well over the last four years to be the solid central defender he has now become!

The defence line was generally solid, save for the slight loss of concentration that resulted in the goal for Cape Verde.

The midfield had: Debutant Innocent Bonke, who was defensive mid-fielder; and did his job with dexterity! The central midfield was manned by Kingsley Michael; as debutant, he had the extra responsibility of co-ordinating affairs in mid-field. And he did his job with the needed efficiency!

Moses Simon, alias "the Atilogwu dancer", as right-sided, wing offensive mid-fielder, was good. Chidera Ejuke, as left-sided, wing offensive mid-fielder, was marvellous. And was together with Victor Oshimen, in my considered opinion, the "men- of- the- match" !

The mid-field set up was more offensive- oriented than in the match against Liberia, and the two debutants had a solid game!

The strikers' duo collectively had a good game, mainly, because of the efforts of Victor Oshimen, alias "El Fantastico". The other half of the twin strikers' partnership: The supersonic jet-heeled, Skipper Ahmed "Mansa" Musa, one must confess, has gradually failed to live up to expectations. The Ahmed Musa of today, is a far cry from the player of earlier years. This is not abnormal, considering his years of service as a player. However, one hopes his experience, would be helpful to the team.

In summary, the Super Eagles had a good game in Cape Verde notwithstanding the circumstances. They were the better side for all of ninety-four minutes the game lasted. They have shown they have a decent measure of depth as a team! Some observers might attribute their victory to a decent measure of fortuitousness. Yes, that could have been brought about, as a consequence of their hard work and industry as team!

A very big congratulations to the Coach Rohr-led technical crew and the Super Eagles!
