Continued from Part 10
former coach of the Super Eagles, once said that, any team that doesn't have a substitutes' bench that is almost as strong as the first eleven, is not a good team. In other words, a coach cannot go to sleep until he has a strong set of twenty-three players!
This should be one of the objectives of a good coach, when building a team. In other words, a strong substitutes' bench, together with a strong first eleven, is a "condition sin qua non" to having a solid team. One is thus happy Coach Rohr, gets the message, and has been working hard in this direction!
One will give examples of how substitutes have influenced matches of the Super Eagles in the years past:
At the opening's match of the 1980 Nations' cup competition, the Super Eagles were in trouble, in the second half, Coach Otto Gloria, introduced: Sylvanus Okpala and Felix Owolabi, and the tide of the game changed in Nigeria's favour!;
In 1981, during the World cup qualifier between Nigeria and Tunisia, in Lagos, Coach Otto Gloria, introduced, Emma Osuigwe, in the second half, and he got the elusive second goal and the equaliser;
Of more recent memory, Coach Rohr, introduced Ahmed Musa, in the second half of the match against Algeria, in Uyo, and he helped create the third goal scored by Victor Moses; and
In the game against Zambia, in Uyo, Coach Rohr, introduced Alex Iwobi, in the second half, and he scored the "golden" goal that took Nigeria, to the 2018 World cup.
One hopes that the substitutes of the 2018 World cup team, will live up to expectations!
