“Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony” (Col. 3:14).
e thank God that in the Word of God, we can find the blueprint of the new life he would want us to live, which are befitting as followers of Christ. In Colossians 3: 12 - 14, Paul the Apostle used figurative words to admonish Christians at the Church in Colossae to live the new life, which they received in Christ. In verses 10, 12 & 14, he used the word: ‘clothe’ (NRSV), or ‘put on’ (KJV,) to describe the kind of life a child of God should live. Also, in verses 5, 8 & 9, he used the phrase ‘put to death’, ‘get rid of’ and ‘strip off’ (NRSV), or ‘put off’ (KJV) to describe the old man or nature which portrays the life they followed before then.
Apostle Paul’s conviction was that since we have given ourselves to God through Christ, we should drop sinful nature or ungodly lifestyles; and go for the kind of life, which portrays what we believe and who we are in Christ. He reminds us in verse 12, that we are God’s chosen ones, holy people in the eyes of God, and people who are loved by God. If indeed that we have these privileges described here, then our lifestyles should reflect that of Jesus Christ.
Christian lifestyles or attitude are referred as a cloth in this text. Just as human beings put on cloths to protect the body, to look beautiful and smart in the physical, so also Christians have spiritual life; and the spiritual cloths as mentioned in Colossians (3: 12 & 14) include compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, patience, and love. These are spiritual clothes for the lives of those who have been redeemed and transformed through Christ.
If you look closer, you will notice that Paul gave more emphasis on love as a necessary cloth; because, this is the central theme of the Christian faith as expressed in the Holy Bible. Apostle Paul in verse 14, said: “Above all, clothe yourselves with love,” “Above all,” means the number one in the list. It could also mean the most important; or the summary point. Love as a Christian lifestyle is important; and it is the summary of the Christian teachings. The same verse 14, asserts that love “binds everything together in perfect harmony. In fact, the genuine love of God in us comes with other spiritual clothes as mentioned in our text.
In the Holy Bible, Jesus Christ, in his teachings summarizes the whole laws and prophets this way: “love the Lord your God with all your hearts … and your neighbor as yourselves.” Indeed, our love for God reflects in our relationships with our neighbors. Our neighbors are people which we come across in the world. They are human beings created in the image of God. Irrespective of class, religion, race, tribe, language and color, we should love all humanity. This love must be real, practical and holy. The way we treat or relate with each other should reveal the true love of God that is in us.
God want us to share his love with everyone. We preach the Gospel when we show genuine love to people. This is more active than mere lips service. Genuine love is life-transforming indeed. It brings joy, peace, strength, progress, and encouragement to everyone who receives it. Listen to these important remarks:
As we journey through this life, determine in your heart that genuine love of God should guide your entire actions in life, and it will define or beautify your relationship with one another. Do exactly what the Lord says you should do according to Colossians Chapter 3. Wear your clothes always, and be thankful.
PRAYER: Loving Lord, we thank you that we are God’s chosen ones, and beloved, new creation in you, and that in your love, kindness and mercy you have given us the promise of eternal life. Give us new life and clothe us with your eternal blessings. Amen.
Wishing you peace and joy this season
