FROM THE PREACHER"S LENSES
|Wednesday, October 20, 2021|
lot of cheating pervades our world and it is responsible for many of the conflicts taking place within families, towns and neighboring villages and within nations. Those behaviors are nothing but contempt for God; described in other words, these conflicts would not have occurred if people have respect for God and His laws.
It is the pleasure and joy of God, who creates us that we live in happiness and peace among ourselves and in order to achieve this, He gave us laws to guide our day to day life. Unfortunately man ignores these laws, which are meant to benefit us and we flagrantly disobey Him.
There are always two forces waging war to gain the control of our heart; the force of the Living God and that of the Devil but I find it difficult to understand why we listen to the voice of the Devil rather than the voice of God, allowing the Devil to rule our heart.
Do we not realize that 'hell' is the end result, when Satan gains control of our hearts?
Apostle Peter warned in his second book chapter 2 verse 11 "Dear friends, I warn you as "temporary residents and foreigners" to keep away from worldly desires that wage war against your very souls"
King Solomon who is believed to have written the book of Ecclesiastes wrote in 11:8 that "When a crime is not punished quickly, people feel it is safe to do wrong" But it is all stupidity because God sits in heaven watching everything, which is happening in the world and He renders justice appropriately.
As frightening as these warnings are, yet, man will not stop cheating and doing other fraudulent behavior to his fellow man. And it is more worrisome when supposedly men of God; Deacons, Pastors, Imams and Alhajis engage in cheating their fellow human beings.
There are numerous stories in the Bible of how God punished the wicked and people of other vice behaviors but today I want to tell the story of a certain king by the name Ahab and his wife Jezebel. The queen organized the murder of one of her subjects, Naboth so that the king could acquire his vineyard and God wiped them off and all their generation in due time.
So the topic of my sermon toady is "Contempt for God and its Consequences: Example of King Ahab
I hope someone will learn from this story and repent of his/her fraudulent behavior.
Mo ni ireti pe enikan yio fi itan yii se arikogbon, yio si ronupiwada iwa jibiti re.
Let us pray.
Contempt for God and its Consequences: Example of King Ahab.
Ahab was the king in Samaria. A man by the name Naboth from Jezreel had a vineyard, which was close to the palace. The story is recorded in the book of first King 21.
Because Naboth's vineyard was close to the palace, the king proposed to Naboth to have it for a vegetable garden in exchange for some better plots of land elsewhere or that Naboth sells the land to him. Naboth objected to both proposals and he was right. Land is inheritance passed from generations to generations. 3 He replied, "The LORD forbids that I should give you the inheritance that was passed down by my ancestors."
Let everyone go into history and he will discover that family land is cherished and never wished away. Unfortunately, family lands are often grabbed by the powerful, resulting in feud and leading to court cases, and in many instances, loss of lives. This ought not to be except for contempt for God and lack of respect for His ordinance.
Covetousness is one thing, which God hates and it is one of the Ten Commandments, which God handed to man to obey. King Ahab and the queen, Jezebel had contempt for God and this law. Jezebel organized the murder of Naboth and the king, Ahab acquired the property.
But nothing is hidden from God. God saw it and He sent Prophet Elijah to confront the king.
17 -- the LORD said to Elijah,[a] 18 "Go down to meet King Ahab of Israel, who rules in Samaria. He will be at Naboth's vineyard in Jezreel, claiming it for himself. 19 Give him this message: 'This is what the LORD says: Wasn't it enough that you killed Naboth? Must you rob him, too? Because you have done this, dogs will lick your blood at the very place where they licked the blood of Naboth!'"
20 "So, my enemy, you have found me!" Ahab exclaimed to Elijah.
"Yes," Elijah answered, "I have come because you have sold yourself to what is evil in the LORD's sight. 21 So now the LORD says,[b] 'I will bring disaster on you and consume you. I will destroy every one of your male descendants, slave and free alike, anywhere in Israel! 22 I am going to destroy your family as I did the family of Jeroboam son of Nebat and the family of Baasha son of Ahijah, for you have made me very angry and have led Israel into sin.'
23 "And regarding Jezebel, the LORD says, 'Dogs will eat Jezebel's body at the plot of land in Jezreel.[c]'
24 "The members of Ahab's family who die in the city will be eaten by dogs, and those who die in the field will be eaten by vultures."
Do we still have prophets who will deliver God's judgment to the powerful towns who are taking over the lands of the small neighboring towns?
Truth has departed the world. What does anyone expect when supposedly men of God; Pastors, Deacons, Alfas, Alhajis etc themselves are part of the party that forcefully take other peoples' lands. And should the owners raise their voice, the powerful people put them in detention just like king Ahab and queen Jezebel killed poor Naboth.
King Solomon who is believed to have written the book of Ecclesiastes wrote in 8:11 that "When a crime is not punished quickly, people feel it is safe to do wrong" But it is all stupidity because God sits in heaven watching all, which is happening in the world and He renders justice appropriately.
When Ahab heard the judgment pronounced on him, he tore his clothing, dressed in mourning cloth, and fasted. He even slept in mourning cloth and went about in deep mourning.
28 Then another message from the LORD came to Elijah: 29 "Do you see how Ahab has humbled himself before me? Because he has done this, I will not do what I promised during his lifetime. It will happen to his sons; I will destroy his dynasty."
Do we see how the sins of king Ahab have affected his generation?
After some years, when one would think that God had forgotten the evil, which king Ahab did, and there was peace in the land, the Devil made Ahab to fight a war with Aram, a country today known as Syria. The true Prophet of God by the name Micaiah warned him against the war, but rather than listen to Micaiah, he listened to the false prophets who were in the majority and he was killed in the war.
Verse 37 & 38 of the book reported:
37 So the king died, and his body was taken to Samaria and buried there. 38 Then his chariot was washed beside the pool of Samaria, and dogs came and licked his blood at the place where the prostitutes bathed,[c] just as the LORD had promised.
The story of how queen Jezebel and the generation of king Ahab perished is recorded in the book of 2Kings 9. Jezebel died at the vineyard of Naboth and dogs licked her blood there and she could not be recognized as Prophet Elijah had prophesied it (2Kings 9:36-37).
All you powerful towns who grab lands that belong to your weak neigbouring towns, what seed are you planting for your future generation? In my own case am saying what God has sent me to tell you.
King Ahab planted big curses for his future generation. All you people who sell lands and forcefully take them back and forcing them to pay second time, what seeds are you planting for your children and their generation; blessing or a curse?
You had better repent of this evil to avert God's wrath on you and your coming generation because God did not mince words, He says that He is a God of vengeance who fights for the oppressed (Nahum 1:2).
God spoke as recorded in Psalms 12:5
"Because of the oppression of the poor, because of the sighing of the needy, Now will I arise, saith Jehovah; I will set him in the safety he pants for"
In the New Living Translation, it reads "The LORD replies, "I have seen violence done to the helpless, and I have heard the groans of the poor. Now I will rise up to rescue them, as they have longed for me to do."
King Solomon wrote in Proverbs 14:31 "Whoever oppresses (cheats) the poor insults his Maker"
Listen to me, people of big towns, it is God who has made you big. It is not by your power and wisdom. All you need to do if you need further land is to negotiate. The wise people of the Scripture negotiated.
Land ownership is part of our culture in Nigeria. It is a fact known to us all. How can there be peace in any community where one particular neighboring town occupies the ancestral land of its neighboring towns simply because over the time, it has been favored by certain factors and it has grown big and produced many highly placed people?
Where there is Godliness, the right thing to do is to buy the land from the rightful owner and not to occupy it nor go to the court with forged documents, employing ungodly lawyers to argue the case in its favor.
When Sarah, Abraham's wife died and Abraham saw a land, which pleased him to bury her, he openly and honestly negotiated and paid for the land in the presence of witnesses (Gen. 23). Abraham did not forge documents to claim ownership. Besides he had become mighty in war, he could forcibly acquire it but he did not do any of those but paid the right price.
These are Godly behavior that makes peace to reign in the land. I hope all the big cities that are oppressing their neighboring small towns, acquiring their land, concocting stories, forging documents, will learn to be Godly like Abraham and King David before the true judge of heaven come to the rescue of the people they are oppressing and destroy their properties and pride. The same goes for the people who call themselves the children of the land, who after their fathers had been paid, would foment trouble by reselling the same land to another fellow except the first buyer rebuys it.
Get it right that the God of heaven is looking down, watching the activities of man below and He is a God of vengeance. He could destroy all your properties and reduce you to nothing.
