THE INFLUENCE OF 2 GENERATIONS OF GODLY MOTHERS ON THEIR SON

e celebrate several things in the year; birthday, new year, wedding etc. Another year has rolled by to celebrate our mothers. I personally see it a wise thing to set a day apart in the year to celebrate them.

The Apostle Paul in his first epistle to the Corinthians 11 verse 12, paid tribute to them. He wrote "For although the first woman came out of man, all men have been born from women ever since, -----"(1Cor. 11: 12).

The most powerful man in the world was born by a woman. Our Lord Jesus Christ Himself was born by a woman. So, it is wise to celebrate them. But just as they are very important in the life of every human being, so are the responsibilities and loads laid on them.

To me, mothers' day should be more than the mothers, taking rest from the kitchen that day and the fathers to take over.

To me Mothers' Day is more than the fathers appreciating the mothers by taking them to a restaurant for a good meal. Of course it is a good thing to do for the mothers who have played their roles very well as good mothers. Even mothers who have not done well can still be taken for a meal in order to provide opportunity to talk things over in a loving environment in the areas where they are failing.

The Mothers' Day should be a day for the mothers to reflect on their performances over the years and take a review and see where they ought to braze up.

God decided He was not going to hide things from Abraham because He knew that Abraham will command his children and household after Him and they shall keep the way of the Lord, to do justice and judgment that Lord may bring upon Abraham that which He had spoken of him. (Gen.18:19).

From here, we can conclude that the greatest expectation of God from fathers and mothers is to train our children in the way of the Lord.

King Solomon said "Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it (Prov. 22:6).

On this Mother's day, I want us to see the influence of two generations of Godly mothers in the life of a Pastor, Timothy.

Let us pray

The topic of my sermon on this Mothers Day is "The influence of a Godly mother on their Children" and I want us to look at the influence of generations of two Godly mothers in the life of their son.

Apostle Paul met the young man, Timothy in his twenties at a town called Lystra during his second missionary journey.

Lystra is in the present day country called Turkey. Timothy was not a convert of Paul. Timothy had accepted Christ through the influence of his mother Eunice and Eunice too, through her own mother, Lois.

Paul wrote Timothy "I call to remembrance the [b]genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also. (2Tim.1:5).

Paul was so impressed with Timothy that henceforth, he took Timothy with him in his missionary journeys. Paul referred to Timothy as "My son in the faith" (1Tim. 1:2) Elsewhere He addressed Timothy "My dearly beloved son" (2Tim. 1:2). Timothy became a personal assistant to Apostle Paul and He eventually made him the Pastor of the Church at Ephesus (1Tim. 1:3).

What else can be more gladdening for a Christian mother to see her son well grounded in the faith and being used of the Lord? But this could not have been without proper nourishment of the word as the son grows up.

What kind of mother are you?

Do you read the Bible to your children as they grow up? Do you pray with them? Do you sing Godly songs to them? What kind of music do you play in the house or in the car as they grow up, which they listen to; Godly or worldly?

The greatest expectation of God from us fathers and mothers is to train our children in His way.

God decided not to hide what He wanted to do but reveal it to Abraham because He was sure that Abraham was going to command his children and his household after him that they keep the way of the Lord to do justice and judgement so that the Lord may bring upon Abraham, that, which He had spoken of him (Gen 18:19).

King Solomon said "Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it (Prov. 22:6).

If all women in this world were like mama Eunice and her mother Lois, I am sure we will not witness all the evil we are witnessing in our world today, Nigeria inclusive.

Mothers, your role model should be grandma Lois and mama Eunice.

Same king Solomon says that "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom" (Prov. 9:10)

Someone with the fear of God is a wise person while someone without the fear of the Lord is stupid and foolish.

Someone with the fear of the Lord will do unto others as he will want others do unto him.

Mothers, Do you instill the fear of the Lord in your children's hearts right from their youth?

Mothers, do the children see you do only righteous things? or Do they see you lie and cheat other people?

A child growing up under parents who lie, who cheat, dupe and do other evils, will see it as the norm and do same, right from early in life, except Jesus comes into his/her heart at a time in future.

Mothers, do you relate with the fathers as a good example for your daughters, which they can reflect on, in future in order to live peaceably with their husbands?

I ask again, what kind of mother are you?

It is important to note that though mama Eunice was a Christian Jewess but her husband, Timothy's father was a Greek. Momo Eunice must have been a good wife such that Timothy's father did not object to his son's conversion to Christianity and for Timothy to even be circumcised (Acts.16:1-4)

But before a child is able to imbibe Godly characters, he must be taught the fear of the Lord and that was why the king, Solomon said "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it" (Prov. 22: 6)

The fear of the Lord is the thing lacking in our leaders in Nigeria, where they alone live in luxury while the largest majority of the populace are decimated.

Let us revisit the reason why God will not hide things from Abraham. It was because He was sure that Abraham was going to command his children and his household after him that they keep the way of the Lord to do justice and judgement so that Lord may bring upon Abraham that which He had spoken of him (Gen 18:19).

God has a good plan for every of His creation and from what God said about Abraham, it is certain that parents have a great role to play in order to bring to pass God's good plans for the child. God's plans for His children are good and not of evil to give a future and a hope (Jer. 29: 11).

In fact, God assigns an angel to protect every child from evil and it is the duty of parents to create an environment for the angel to dwell.

Where it is all chaos and fight in the home, the angel will certainly take his leave and the child will be vulnerable to all kinds of dangers from Satan.

Mother, are you providing a Godly environment whereby God can bring to pass His good plans for your children? Is your home one, where the Guiding angels of your children can stay?

Unfortunately some children depart the Godly path, which parents laid for them when they were growing, and became vulnerable to the attack of Satan after their angels depart them. Such children become armed robbers, kidnappers, Yahoo boys and girls; they become treasury looters who subject the populace to penury. And I even hear that some mothers of such children are proud of the activities of such children. May any mother listening to me not be members of such a group.

In order to raise Godly children, mothers must learn to do family alter every morning and at night with them. I know that job duties may not allow a regular timing. But every family must make it a duty to do evening prayer with their children every day.

I was raised up by a mother without the Western education. We were not able to gather for prayer in the morning because she left for the farm before day break but I cannot remember any day, which we miss family night prayer.

1. Faith of our mothers, living still
In cradle song and bedtime prayer;
In nursery lore and fireside love,
Thy presence still pervades the air.
Faith of our mothers, living faith,
We will be true to thee till death.

2. God, give us Christian homes!
Homes where the Bible is loved and taught,
Homes where the Master's will is sought,
Homes crowned with beauty Your love has wrought;
God, give us Christian homes;
God, give us Christian homes.

3. God, give us Christian homes!
Homes where the mother, in queenly quest,
Strives to show others Your way is best,
Homes where the Lord is an honored guest;
God, give us Christian homes;
God, give us Christian home.

4. God give us Christian homes!
Homes where the children are led to know
Christ in His beauty who loves them so
Homes where alter fire burns and glows
God give us Christian homes; God give us Christian homes.
