A NATION NOT SHORT IN PRAYERS YET WITH NO SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENT IN LIVING CONDITION OF THE COMMON PEOPLE

igeria is a nation of prayers, no doubt but unfortunately with scanty results as it relates to the living condition of the common people in the community.

The reason for this is what I want to examine today and explain what we must do so that the common people can have a better life.

So today, the topic of my sermon is "A Nation not Short in Prayers yet with no Significant Improvement in the living Condition of the Common People"

Meanwhile let us pray.

I was in Nigeria early in December till late in January and I witnessed enormous blasts of prayer sounds oozing from the loud speakers of prayer houses from far and near, night and day.

I wonder if there is any nation on the globe that her people spend longer time in prayer than Nigeria.

The blasts of prayer that oozed days and nights from the loud speakers mounted on the roofs of the Churches and Mosques, left, right and centre, is overwhelming.

But how I wish the prayers were made with knowledge i.e how I wish those prayers were properly targeted to the real source of the problems of the people!

Thirty to forty years ago, people, particularly the young, were pleaded with, to attend house of worship. Of course Nigeria has always been a very religious nation but to be spending all days and nights in the prayer houses and on the mountains, as we have been having it in recent years, was not so.

The spending of days and nights in Churches and mountains started when life became difficult for the majority of citizens.

The spending of days and nights in Churches, prayer lands and mountains was absent in the days when High School leavers got jobs promptly.

It was not like this when Grade three teachers, not to talk of Grade two teachers were posted to Schools where they would teach before they even left their training institutions.

It was not like this when students who attended Government sponsored Secondary Schools and Colleges ate free food, had monthly pocket money, free clothing, free books, tea at break times, transportation money to go home at the end of term and transportation money to return to school after vacation, when their prescription glasses were paid for etc.

The spending of days and nights in Churches, Mosques and mountains was absent in the days when every University undergraduate ate three course meals a day, had their clothes laundered by the University and got 2 or more jobs before they even finished writing their final examination papers.

The spending of days and nights in Churches, Mosques and mountains was absent in the days when we went to the hospital and the Doctors gave us prescriptions to the Pharmacy and the medications were dispensed free of charge.

It was not so in the days when my uncles who worked as labourers in the Government General Hospitals and Railway Stations, yet with their meager pay sponsored my cousins and friends in the high schools.

We can adduce that when life was calm, citizens went to the house of worship purely as a religious obligation. Certainly this is no longer the case. Today, one problem or the other is the major reason, why many people attend the weekly prayer sessions.

Today, increased life problems; joblessness, search for husband, none thriving business, illnesses, which can be easily taken care of, had our hospitals been functioning properly etc are partly, the reasons, which make the citizens to seek solution to their various problems in those prayer houses and mountains and I actually consider it wise of them that they considered houses of worship for solution.

But in spite the 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, round the clock prayers, why have things remained the same for them?

Why are things still stagnant or even in retardation mode? Why is there still mass unemployment?

I am preaching on the topic "A Nation not Short in Prayers yet with no Significant Improvement in the living Condition of the Common People"

Why do our hospitals remain nonfunctioning? Why can we not find rest in these hospitals?

Why is financing the education of our children still difficult?

Is it that God no longer keep to His promise to answer our prayers in spite all the round the clock prayers in those houses of prayers and mountains?

I want to answer these questions partly and provide solutions so that we can have positive changes to our lives.

Though the people pray, there are no significant results because they are ignorant of how to pray, ignorant of what to pray for or how to direct their prayer.

James the elder wrote "Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts (James 4:3).

Too much concern and attention on "self" stemming from ignorance is the major reason, I want to submit as to why, though people pray, their problems remain un resolved.

Too much concern and attention for 'self-interest' has blocked the minds of many people to know how to effectively direct their prayers, which can lead to positive results.

The reason why in the past, Secondary school graduates and those who attended teacher training colleges got job promptly and University graduates had 2 or 3 jobs waiting for them before they even finished writing their final papers is because the number of job openings by far exceeded the number of people looking for job. So the applicants had variety of choices.

Therefore what will have been a useful prayer in Nigeria of today is a return to that situation when job opportunities were larger than the number of applicants.

At the time past in question, there were so many job opportunities, which Nigerians could not totally fill and expatriates had to be brought from India, The Philippines, Egypt, Srilanka and from many other countries of the world.

If in 1980, someone had prophesied that by the year 2000 AD, there would be thousands of unemployed Nigerian University graduates roaming the streets of Nigeria, such a person would be tagged a prophet of doom.

Let me ask you, which is more beneficial; to have a thousand job openings with just 20 applicants or to have 20 job openings and 1000 applicants?

Certainly the first option is preferable and I can bet it that once we are able to get back to that state, many people will automatically pick their mats in the prayer places and mountains and return to their homes, because business will automatically thrive.

And who have benefitted from all the prayer cells operated in every nooks and corners of the towns and cities but the owners?

The sweeter the mouths of the owners of those prayer houses and mountains, the bigger the audience/attendants and in return, the bigger the financial gain.

The sweeter the prayer language of the operators of the prayer houses, the larger the number of people who attend their prayer sessions and in return the bigger the offering. But does God answer prayers based on eloquence and sweetness of mouth? No, it must be in line with His will.

The larger the boasting capability of the operators of those prayer houses, telling stories of how they turn mountains and hills to lower grounds, the larger the attendants and in return, the larger the offering collected.

I do not intend to bring the effort of anyone down with this thing I want to say. Not at all! But the truth is that I can count tens of people who I know, who have been attending these prayer lands and mountains, weeks after weeks, year in year out, yet they remain jobless or let me say that their different situations and problems have not improved.

But imagine if all those prayer houses, join forces together, make a list of those things that are responsible for our set back, why we have retrogressed, why our government are no longer able to fulfill again, all the obligations it hither to provided up to 40 years ago; make a list of them and then pray against those things, which are working contrary to us. Not only that we pray but seek God's face for His direction to take actions wherever necessary.

This is the only righteous and wise thing for us to do i.e confront the problems headlong, going to the root of the problems and seek collective solution to unemployment and all other problems resulting from it, rather than each one petitioning God to give him a job in a situation where there are ten openings for a thousand applicants.

God does not play favoritism. Consider a situation where there are only five job openings with 2000 applicants or none job openings at all. Is it not going to be like a camel going through the eye of the needle for any of the applicants to fill any of the vacancies?

The thousands applicants attend the same sessions of prayers, with the owner of the prayer house asking God to make all of them get the job. Is that not laughable when a prayer warrior is praying that the same God makes all the 1000 applicants to get the job, for which there are only five openings? Laughable indeed!

What all the prayer houses need to do is to pray for job openings that by far outnumber the number of applicants and better pray seriously for the economy of the nation to grow sufficiently such as to create jobs and accommodate private enterprises. And ferociously wage war against all the factors, which are crippling our economy.

Prophet Hosea said "My people perish because they lack knowledge"

Anyone who has the understanding of the Bible will realize that God has no intention that we suffer deprivation.

He actually worked out a detailed plan of our welfare but it is a collective one.

You can request for my sermon titled "The plan of God for the Welfare of His creation" You can also request for a copy of my book titled "Prosperity of the Nation; Answer to Individual Lasting Prosperity" Same book is titled "Except a Nation Prosper, Individual Prosperity is Short lived; Can't Last"

Anyone, any prayer house, any prayer warrior who sincerely wants us to return to the good old days, when Nigerian citizens had a good life, only need to concentrate on ONE prayer item; that the character of Nigerians; government and governed should be restored to the time in question.

We all prayerfully must acquire a right mind towards Nigeria and work for her prosperity once again. Every citizen must understand that individual's lasting prosperity hangs on the Prosperity of the nation.

Once we are able to return to that life pattern, our woes will be gone in a flash.

Unfortunately, what those prayer houses continually engage themselves with, is raining Holy Ghost fire on perceived and imaginary enemies, who are thought to be responsible for the difficulties of their audience.

I am not denying that there might be witches, working against anyone but the misappropriation of the nation's resources, the selfishness, the greed and lack of pride and patriotism for the nation of those ruling us are the major causes and root causes of the individual's headache. And these are what the prayer houses ought to confront.

Consider a 35year old woman, praying for a husband. But are there no men in the country? Yes, there are thousands of young men out there, who also want to marry but they are jobless, therefore incapable of raising a home. Forty years ago, the next agenda after anyone, woman or man graduate is to marry. They married because the means to do was there. So the root cause of the mismanagement of our economy should have engaged the attention of the people who are behind the 24 hours blaring megaphones and loudspeakers and not one woman or witch.

Let us pray
