“She caught him by his garment, saying, ‘Lie with me.’ But he left his garment in her hand and fled and got out of the house.” Genesis 39:12
Sin is a powerful force that can entangle and destroy anyone who allows it to take root. The Bible warns us about the consequences of sin and provides clear instructions on how to respond: flee. Running away from sin is not a sign of weakness but a demonstration of wisdom, strength, and faith in God. Joseph’s story in Genesis 39 gives us an excellent example of someone who resisted sin by literally fleeing from it.
What the Holy Spirit taught me this morning is that the fact that we don’t talk about sin any more does not diminish its consequences. Fire is fire anywhere anytime in the world if you put your hand whoever you are it will burn . Let us explore why we must run from sin, how we can do it, and the blessings that come from living a life of obedience and holiness in this two- series article: Enjoy.
1. Recognize the Deceptive Nature of Sin
“But each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.” James 1:14-15
Sin often appears attractive and harmless at first, but its end result is always destruction. It deceives us by appealing to our desires and emotions, promising pleasure but delivering pain and regret.
Sin is a trap. It offers temporary gratification but leads to spiritual, emotional, and sometimes physical destruction that may be permanent! For example, Adam and Eve were deceived by the serpent in the Garden of Eden. They thought eating the forbidden fruit would make them like God, but instead, it brought shame, separation, and death permanently from God.(Genesis 3).Ask God for discernment to recognize the subtle traps of sin. Avoid situations and influences that make sin appear normal or acceptable.
2. Flee from Temptation
“Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body.”1 Corinthians 6:18 –
When Potiphar’s wife tried to seduce Joseph, he didn’t negotiate, rationalize, or delay. He ran. Fleeing from temptation requires decisiveness, discipline and courage.
Sometimes, the only way to overcome temptation is to physically or mentally remove yourself from the situation.Joseph left his garment in Potiphar’s wife’s hand because he prioritized his relationship with God over his reputation or comfort (Genesis 39:7-12).
Identify areas of weakness in your life and set boundaries to protect yourself from temptation. Be willing to leave behind anything—even if it’s costly—to remain faithful to God.
3. Depend on God’s Word for Strength
“I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”Psalm 119:11
The Word of God equips us to resist temptation and live a life of holiness. Jesus demonstrated this when He was tempted by Satan in the wilderness. Each time, He responded with Scripture (Matthew 4:1-11).
God’s Word is a weapon against sin. It reminds us of His promises and keeps us grounded in truth.
When Satan tempted Jesus to turn stones into bread, Jesus replied, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God”(Matthew 4:4).
Spend time daily in God’s Word. Memorize Scriptures that address areas where you struggle, so you can draw on them in times of temptation.
Watch out for Part 2
