“Remember Lot’s wife.” Luke 17:32
Jesus gave this brief but powerful warning during His teaching on the coming of the Kingdom. “Remember Lot’s wife” is a statement loaded with meaning. It is a caution against disobedience, spiritual compromise, and longing for the things God has called us to leave behind. Lot’s wife became a pillar of salt because she looked back at Sodom with a heart still attached to the city’s pleasures and sin.
Below are five quick lessons the Holy Spirit is teaching us today:
1. Disobedience is dangerous with dangerous consequences. “Flee for your lives! Don’t look back, and don’t stop anywhere in the plain!”Genesis 19:17 God gave Lot and his family a clear command: escape and do not look back. Lot’s wife disobeyed, and her action led to her demise.God’s instructions are not suggestions; they are commands for our safety and blessing. Disobedience, even in small things, can have significant and devastating consequences. In 2025, prioritize obedience to God in every area of your life. Trust that His commands are for your good.1 Samuel 15:22 – “To obey is better than sacrifice.”
2. Avoid Divided Loyalties “But Lot’s wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.”Genesis 19:26 Lot’s wife looked back because her heart was still in Sodom. She couldn’t fully embrace God’s salvation because she longed for what she left behind.Divided loyalties hinder spiritual growth. You cannot hold onto the world and God at the same time.As you move forward into 2025, let go of any attachments to sin, past mistakes, or worldly pleasures.”No one can serve two masters.” Matthew 6:24 .
3. The Cost of Looking Back Looking back symbolized regret, unbelief, and a desire for what God was destroying. It cost Lot’s wife her life and her future.Looking back often leads to stagnation or destruction. God calls us to move forward, trusting Him with what lies ahead.Stop dwelling on past failures, disappointments, or even successes. Focus on the future God has prepared for you. The only thing you can do about your past is to learn from it, you can’t reuse, retrieve or buy it back ! It is gone . Move on to something greater! “Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal.”Philippians 3:13-14
4. God will judge sin and this world! Jesus is coming back. Lot’s wife serves as a prototype and reminder that God’s judgment is real , sin will be judged and people will choose to go to eternity with Jesus or hell with Satan. No amount of how we avoid the word “hell” on our pulpit or psychedelic about it in our discussion - hell is in the Bible. Sodom was destroyed because of its wickedness, and her punishment was part of God’s justice. Those who do evil shall go to hell! God’s grace is abundant, but His justice cannot be ignored. In 2025, live with the awareness that Jesus is coming back not as a lamb, but a lion, not as a saviour, but as a judge.Strive to live a life that honors God and reflects His holiness will land you in heaven. – “It is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment.”Hebrews 9:27
5. Keep Your Eyes Fixed on the Destination Lot and his family were headed to safety, but Lot’s wife was distracted by what she left behind. Her inability to focus on the destination cost her dearly. Spiritual focus is essential to finishing well. Fix your eyes on Jesus and the eternal rewards ahead. In 2025, set your priorities on things above and not on earthly distractions. Look ahead build your career, marriage, ministry and business. God came down as Angels, drag Lot’s wife from Sodom, God sent Jesus to drag you from SIN. Leave SIN alone! Hebrews 12:2 – “Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.”Hebrews 12:2
Conclusion Lot’s wife is a sobering reminder of the dangers of disobedience, divided loyalties, and spiritual compromise. As we approach the opportunities and challenges of 2025, let us learn the five lessons above and more. Ask yourself, am I a backward looking person or forward looking, browbeating myself and dwelling in regrets or taking risk , walking in faith and moving forward? It’s a choice.
