t was 1985. I was a young man, fresh off of National Youth Service, living in Lagos, Nigeria. I cannot very much recall what I was doing one day and the song came on TV. Immediately I heard the song, the refrain got me rooted to one spot because of its meaning as well as the beautiful melody.

Then it dawned on me that the crooners were some of the greatest artists that had graced the face of the earth – Michael Jackson, Lionel Ritchie, Stevie Wonder, Cindy Lauper, and more. These were artists that had made great names for themselves in their solo strides.

It was much later, after some inquiries, that I got to understand why the musicians came together. It was to raise money for aid to places experiencing famine inf Africa. From that moment on, from time to time, the song would be played on TV. I eventually bought a copy of the album and must have played that album every day. That was how my fondness for this great song started. Of course, when you play song that often, you invariably learn it by heart. And regardless of the fact that bits and pieces of the song were sung by different artists, I learned the voice, tonality and how each singer presented their parts. I would subsequently play and sing the song to friends, to their delight, and it never left my mind.

Enjoy the song
