number of Bible characters have been selected for study, those who have experienced trials and temptations in their life time. We are looking at John the Baptist today. The aim is to learn from their courage, faith, patience and endurance in their moment of difficulties.

John the Baptist (St Mark 6:12-29).

He was beheaded for proclaiming the truth of the law of God. Herod the king had violated God's law by marrying Herodias, who originally was the wife of Prince Philip, his brother. John the Baptist told Herod plainly, "It is not lawful" (vs. 18). The Mosaic Law as stated in Lev. 18:8 and Deut 25:5 forbids it.

An opportunity opened for Herodias' daughter to request of the king "anything" after the careless king (Herod), had sworn even to the half of the kingdom (vs.23). A wicked and vengeful Herodias asked the daughter to demand for the head of John (vs.24-25).

But did Jesus not say of him "..I say unto you, he is more than a prophet Verily I say unto you, among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist." (Matt 11:8-11).

So, how could the Lord had allowed such a terrible, disgraceful and cruel death to befall him (John)? This is what we refer to as "The Affliction of the Righteous"

May God raise for us in Nigeria, men of faith who will not compromise with evil people but speak boldly about all the unrighteous, wicked, cruel, injustice etc that pervade our society.
