A POEM FOR NIGERIA AT 58

eautiful cloudless light
hovering your sky.
Hope dashed, hope recovered.
You were on the verge of a cliff,
Ready to be consumed
In the bellies of your distractors.

You were rescued
By the voice of reason.
Plebeians' decision is palliative.
Now, the Plebeians are rattled
By the slow pace of dividends.

Your rescuer is misconstrued
By those whose sources of
Illegal income are blocked.
The bleeding has subsided.
Your rescuer's intention
Is known to the contented
And the optimists and Buharists.

You were raped for decades,
With the nonchalant mindtrips
Of your rapists, and the raped.
Now, under the rescuer,
Corruption is nonplussed.

Corrupt people are miffed
For gradual blockage
Of sources of illegal wealth.
You are still beautiful inside
But ugly and bruised outside
The reconstruction of your
Beauty takes time to glow,
But you will be beautiful
Again on the outside!

As you moderately
Celebrate your semicentennial
Plus, hope is revived
In the midst of hopelessness.
Happy anniversary Nigeria!
