Dear President Elect & Fellow Nigerians,

There is no doubt that Nigeria is loaded with much problems. We urge the new president to remember that he has inherited much problems. And to whom much is given much is expected.

Aluta continua. This is either going to be a change or we will continue to wait until all the vermins are disposed off.

Congratualtions!

I must first of all thank the contributors of Nigeria information on the Internet especially the Webmasters, Odili.net; Webmasters, Vanguard Newspapers; Webmasters, Guardian Newspapers; Webmasters, Postexpresswired; Webmasters, Nigeria.net, Webmasters, africanews.org You all really make life better and easier for all Nigerians all everywhere the world.

Secondly, I congratulate both Mr Olusegun Obasanjo and Mr Olu Falae for their efforts to make Nigeria better again, one must not forget Mr Abdulsalami Abubakar, who accidentally became the current Head of State, for if not for him we probably will not be doing this right now. Thank God for this day. Let's all pray that Democracy is here to stay for ever. My advice to all Nigerians is that we MUST NOT expect a dramatic change to all problems in short period. Its easier to destroy than to rebuild, it took the army about three decades to get to this point. We must give peace a chance let the President elect try his best.

To All, It was nice reading the views of concerned Nigerians on the political situations in Nigeria. We always have our reservations and as an optimist, I advise that we only make the best of what we have. Democracy based on a shaky foundation is completely unacceptable but we could console ourselves from the words of HOS Abubakar who suggests that our inadequacies should be seen as a part of a learning process.

I go along with the views of Soyinka & co who prefer to consider the incoming Obasanjo's regime as a transition for a true democracy which hopefully will surface in the next election. Nigeria is blessed with some of the best human resources that any country can boost of therefore; we should always be aiming at the best. We quite appreciate the fact the lack of proper infrastructures could undermine our performance compared to colleagues in the developed countries but election malpractice is a stain on our credibility.

I congratulate all Nigerians at home and abroad for another turning point in our history and I pray that this crucial move will improve the standard of living of an average Nigerian. I commend the politicians for their relentless efforts to keep going after all the horrible experiences of the past especially during the Babaginda and Abacha's administrations,

Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown, they say. I hope Obasanjo is mentally and psychological prepared for the uneasy task ahead to deliver us from the messy situation that we are at present. I will continue to pray to God to give the president-elect the strength and wisdom to shoulder the responsibilities.

Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria!

Subject:Unfulfilled Ambition : Chief Olu Falae Must Tread Softly

From:"Olufunsho. O. Famuyiwa."

Hi Chuck, I seize this opportunity to commend you for giving the world NigeriaWEB which is an exemplary medium for discourse and tremendous info resource about Nigeria. I marvel at the energy exerted to keep us Naijas timely informed. Wishing you more byte to your browser or is it mouse !

As for the presidential election, I pray that SANITY will soon prevail as I had pleaded in an article posted on this site a few weeks back. Now, I was never an Obasanjo fan, but all my prejudices aside, I give him kudos for the vigour of his electoral campaign. In an unexpected reversal of roles, he did all the things that I thought Falae would do and Falae did all that I expected from Obasanjo. To my surprise, Gen. Obasanjo showed himself to be AFFABLE (cracking jokes and laughing; did you notice that special hand-shake he exchanged with somebody at Abuja? ), ADVENTUROUS (riding on horse back), FAMILY-ORIENTED (always ushering his wife in front of him at all times), HUMAN (either dancing uninhibitedly or throwing back his head and snoring away in a deep slumber from campaign exhaustion), SERIOUS (answering questions with thoughtful reflection) and even HUMBLE ( call it PR if you wish, but he insisted on taking his turn like everybody else when he voted ).

What Nigeria needs now is Prayer that the Spirit of the Lord will abide with Gen. Obasanjo, unwanted as he might have been to some of us, and guide him to DO WHAT IS RIGHT FOR THE WHOLE COUNTRY and not just some vested interests. I believe that the Bible says that there is nobody who is beyond redemption. So it is with Obasanjo At the same time, we must not relent in our demands for HONESTY, EQUITY, TRUTH and JUSTICE in the country by pushing for Restructuring and Regional Autonomy through all democratic means. Our time and energy must be concentrated on these and other matters that will alleviate the sufferings of Nigerians and NOT on Chief Olu Falae's frustrated political ambition.

It is time to move on. Let Sanity prevail.

Olufunsho. O. Famuyiwa.

Mr. Odili, live forever for your site. To Nigerians, congratulations. We finally made it. Certainly, mistakes were made in the past; I hope we learnt from them.

Mr. Obasanjo, we wish you well. The people have spoken; but do not disappoint them. The school children, without books, desks to sit on, more than 100 in a classroom, have been waiting for a leader. Do not forget the school teachers, civil servants, etc., working without salaries. You know about school leavers and college graduates without jobs. You know the status of a common Nigerian in "our" Country - a second class citizen. You know very well the lot of the common people in our country. These people voted you in. I am sure you are aware of the conditions of our roads and high ways. You do use them. You know about inflation in our country. You know about the cost of one cup of garri.

Nigeria is world producer of oil, I am sure you know about fuel shortages in that country. Let's not forget the greatest evil - "kick back". Let's not forget the 'forgotten' agriculture. You know that Nigeria has one of the best arable soils in West Africa. But you have at your disposal both human and natural resources. So you have all you need to govern well.

Mr. Obasanjo, (I feel better to call you 'Mr.' instead of 'general'. I hope you do not mind. 'General' makes me feel that 'the army' is still in power. You know what I mean.) I am sure you know the task ahead and you have very little time. But do you think you will still remember these one year from May, 1999?

From:"Edmund Uche Okoli"

Congratulations to all Nigerians on the success of the recent elections. So far, the comments of the president elect has been heart warming. The reaction of his opponent at the Primaries - Dr Ekwueme has equally been very gracious.

We as Nigerian's, should see the incoming Government, as an interegnum which will be prelude to a total democracy. In this, I mean a democracy devoid of military influence.Hopefully, there will be greater level of success understanding and harmony, between a government led by a 41 one year unelected General and a 61 year Granny who has a national mandate.

I do not however believe that the ruling party needs to go across board to look for qualified and capable Nigerians that can run the country. What we need as a compliment to the Government is an effective, honest, intelligent and responsible opposition. In this regard, it will be in the intrest of the country, for the opposition to unite and work towards selling to the electorate, during the next elections, an attractive manifesto. Nigerian's should see those crossing party lines to the winning party as mere opportunists who are driven by selfish greed and devoid of any intellectual depth. Everybody can not be at the head but all can use their vocation in making effective contributions.

Let us hope that the diaspora who have been making enviable cotributions globally will be encouraged to show their talents at home.

Chuck, Many thanks you for making your website available to surfers on the Internet and your up-todate account of the Presidential Election results in our motherland. The age of information superhighway has been well served, especially at a time of curiousity when Nigerians outside the sub-region were craving for rapid feedback from Nigeria.

My hope is for the citizens of our great country to use "Election 99" as a learning experience for things to come. It must be remembered that Nigerians have not had frequent electionas; so I pray my fellow country men and women to have the patience of Job when dealing with issues (give and take) that affect the country. Furthermore, let people look at the election results, take a deep breadth and move on. It will be fruitful to focus efforts from now on towards rebuilding the country. After all, how long will Nigerians continue to fight and argue instead of working together for the interest of the Nation.

May God bless our land.

Nigeria can Rise Again

I salute all you sons and daughters of Oduduwa for standing up against tyranny, bad government and maginalising of our people with effontry. Out of your conviction you have challenged with one voice and one accord the people who have no clue of governance, let alone to plan the nation's economy, environmental issues, international politics and upliftment of our country Nigeria.

As Yoruba's you have stood your ground against the evil empire of abacha and his henchmen. again i admire and salute you all with my special regards to prof. Wole Soyinka, Gani Fawehinmi, Beko Kuti to mention a few and including the many journalists who were locked up by Abacha along with Chris anyanwu, Arthur Nwankwo and others. I am sure yuo Yorubas will go down well in the history of modern Nigeria when it is written.

As for the Ibos whose tribe I belong to, it is time to stand up with one voice and one vision. We must stop picking from the crumbs of the table. nigeria belongs to all of us, and not to a groupthat store it in their homes and warehouses. The last civil war should not make us resign our fate to the hands of people who do not care about us and the citizenry of our great country Nigeria. our children will not forgive us if we fail to act. The battle to restore Nigeria is just beginning. We must all stick together and bring sanity and restore Nigeria. When men of intergrity and vision take over the rule of the country, nigeria will rise again.

Fellow Nigerians

This is a giant stride into Democracy which we have been longing for.

The past 15 Years had been like cancer pain that had no period of respite. Now is the time to say enough is enough. The military should be allowed to stay in their barracks where they belong. We should discard whatever anybody may say about this last election, come together as a body to forge ahead and build our dear country. Let us remember that Nigeria is greater than any individual or group and therefore we need to welcome this new day.

We shall go forth and build a strong and virile nation.

CONGRATULATIONS, MY BELOVED NIGERIA.

To some extent, the military will give way to civilians and decrees will no longer be a way of life for us. Whether we are able to get rid of the military completely in the political sphere will depend on the way civilian politicians play their cards this time around. Politicians must learn that in an election, only one party is bound to win and losers are expected to accept defeat with grace. Losing parties must stop the direct and indirect incitement and invitation to serving military officers to take over governments simply because their parties lost in an election.

Reading the reports of the various international observers that covered this election, one is made to understand that rigging took place in all areas where each party was strongest. It is unfortunate that we have not outgrown this shameful practice. Mr. Falae should accept the result as the will of the majority of Nigerians. Otherwise, he has the right of appeal. If he wished, he could take his case to the rightly constituted electoral tribunal or the law courts. He must desist from making veiled statements that are capable of encouraging the military to stay a day longer.

While I take this opportunity to congratulate General Obasanjo on his overwhalming success at the polls, I call on all peace and democracy-loving Nigerians to rally round the general for the good of the country.

Congratulations, General.

CONGRATULATIONS PRESIDENT-ELECT OBASANJO

Teaneck, NJ, United States, March 2,1999— The Nigeria democratic Leadership Forum congratulates President-elect Olusegun Obasanjo on his victory and we hope this will bring a renewed beginning for the entire country. We call on all Nigerians to support the new President as Nigeria rededicate herself to assuming the great potential that was implicit at this nations'independence three decades ago. There are many wounds to be healed and it is our hope that a Nigeria under President Obasanjo will prepare us toward bridging the gaps and healing the pains of decades of disregards for the will and rights of Nigerians. This is an opportunity for renewal. This is an opportunity to rededicate ourselves to building a nation that we can all be proud of. We therefore call on the President and his party to unite the country through acts and deeds. To bridge the gap between the north and the south, within the north and within the south, between the rich and the poor because we are certainly all Nigerians. We call on Nigerians home and abroad to focus all their energy towards building a great nation and a great country. This is another opportunity to perform our duty on behalf of the future and better the aspirations of our past. So Mr President be dignify in victory and Chief Falae be dynamic in defeat. Both of you have an important role to play in redefining the path to greatness that has eluded us in the last three decades. We call on Chief Falae to accept defeat and declare his support for President -elect Obasanjo, thereby breaking the tradition that has befallen us and endangered all our previous attempts at democratization. Finally we congratulate every Nigerian, home and abroad for the standing tall inspite of the painful experiences of the past years. For truely, the strength we have all shown is an hallmark of certain greatness that we all know permeates the Nigerian spirit.

First, I wish to commend Odili.net for their consistent coverage of the Nigerian democratic project. The qulity of the editorials, news content , features and the entire page planning kept Nigerians overseas abreast of political developments back home. Congratulations for a job well done.

No doubt, Obansanjo's excitement should be compared to that of Shehu Shagari who forgot his agbada at the Port-Harcourt convention when he was declared winner of NPN presidential primaries. How I wish one could share in this punctuated game of musical chairs. It is my considered opinion that any individual who has ever been giving the opportunity to guide our country to greater Nationhood, but failed should not have the moral courage to seek for any election. However, I sincerely hope this will be Olu's salvation, an opportunity to rewrite the wrongs of the past.

Mr President should be mindful that history repeats itself first as fiction, next as farce . The wind of democratic change blowing across Nations of the world is now having Nigeria as a test bird. Only the path to National reconciliation, Government of National Unity, Restructuring of the federation, and deliberate policies geared towards demarginalisation of the East can lead to a true and lasting democracy.

He is now confronted with dialogue , cosultation, and compromise as an effective tool for civil governance, rather than Command and Order that has guided his military career. How he can adjust is now left to time elaspment.

Accept my hearty congratulations. Long live Nigeria ! !

Date:Tue, 02 Mar 1999 14:04:27 PST

My dear brother Chucks,

I must thank you seriously for making it possible for your fellow countrymen in diasporal to get good information about their fatherland. Having said that I want to thank GOD almigty for giving Nigerians the wisdom to choose an experienced, internationally respected and connected leader like Obasanjo. With all respect to Falae, Nigeria deserves the leadership of Obasanjo at this point in time, his military past not withstanding. Nigeria has been over battered by corruption, tribalism, 419, lies, nepotism, armed robbery, envy, wickedness of the highest order, hunger, lazyness and quite recently some people have been killing and consuming human meat at Oshodi Lagos(cannibalism).

The issue is not only to vote in a democratically elected government but every Nigerian both at home and abroad must stand up and uphold our national honour and pride by reviving our lost or stolen moral values. We must have love for ourselves and our fellow humans while abhoring 419, lies, cannibalism, stealing, and sectionalism. Nigerians must continue to pray for God's intervention in the heart of the average Nigerian so that we can look inward and recognise our potential from our national heritage.

Obasanjo, and the political class can not perform magic if the average Nigerian is not morally upright, indulging in cannibalism, 419, nepotism, tribalism or ethnic conflicts, laziness and lost of honour. When the mind of the average Nigerian is directed towards Gods love,we can be sure to attract all forms of investors to Nigeria. As the world is congratulating Nigeria some Nigerians are somewhere planning to sabotage the whole excercise because they can never be happy in a smooth, happy, and progressive atmosphere. But GOD has taken over Nigeria situation. Obasanjo should use his farming experience to revamp the agricultural sector like RUBBER, PALM OIL, COCOA, COFFEE, GRAINS, GROUNDNUT, and general livestocks like poultry, piggry, cattle rearing and afforestation. The average Nigerian child should have enough milk to drink, food to eat, clothes to wear and good seats with which to sit at school under the (U.P.E)universal primary education. Effort should be made by next addministration to sanitise and protect the Nigerian environment which has long been neglected and abused. Pollution should be erradicated and our natural reseourses shuold be well managed or utilised to produce the basic infrastructure for the average Nigerian, the foreign investor, and future tourists.

When we have put the environment in order by encouraging recycling and maintenance culture couple with our moral uprightness then we can publicise and sell the vast touristic attractions of this greate country called NIGERIA

Congratulations,

Chuck, what should I say more, others have said all. You've been a blessing to many of us who live outside our fatherland, Helping us to know the state of the land, what a service to humanity. May God crown all your effort with good success.

It is simply wonderful that Nigeria is comming to the lime-light again while praying that we remain so, to recover the lost glory among the committee 0f nations.

While I do rejoice with the winner of the last saturday election, Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo(rtd) I have no ill feelings about his candidacy. He has gone through what I can a called a tripod of life. From Power to Prison and now back to Power again. There are lessons he has learnt that he would never have learnt elsewhere except going through such path way of life.

Sir, my humble request to you, is to deliever this country from the brink of destruction and devastation, corruption, famine, health harard, unemployment, bribery, robbery, drugs, poor educational system, etc. I'm sure you know it all.

The courage you put up when you were in prison suffering from a power-drunked leader who wanted to perpetuate himself in the office, shows the kind of person you are made of. In the words of Paul the Apostle " We were troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we were perplexed, but not in despair. Persecuted, but not forsaken, cast down, but not destroyed" IICor4:8,9.

Please beware of evil advisers, those who seek their bellies and not the welfare of the country. This is an opportinity for you to (re)build a legacy for yourself and write your name in the marble. Please let the interest of the poeple who voted you into office be of more concerned to you any.

And lest I forget, as a former millitary man, and a collaborator in coup plotting business. It will be great if you can help us re-structure the military so that there will never be any more coup in the land. We are counting on you for all these important issues.

Once again accept my sincere and heart-felt congratulations as you mount the leadership position come May 29.

Dear President-elect Obasanjo:

Now that you have won the presidency, would you as a matter of urgency immediately initial a program of action to attract back home the numerous highly skilled professionals of Nigerian origin that yawn for some basic standard of living in the country in order to return home and help build the country.

I have in mind something like a new agency that would receive say $5000.00 from an individual returnee to construct 3 to 4 bedroom family quarters in a Nigerian city of their choice. The balance for the expense of construction would be paid on monthly basis after the returnee has settled for at least a year in his or her new home.

This singular act, in addition to other programs you have already enounciated, will no doubt attract an avalanche of Nigerian returnees from all over the world who will help you revive that economy in no time at all.

Congratulations once again, and Good Luck!

A Big congratulations to you Chuck you have kept us linked to our home without us paying a kobo! Thanks so, so much a fantastic job you are doing!

Even we abroad can smell the sense of relief that is thick in the air in Good ole Niga! Even here in the United States! At long last it looks like the battle has finally been won! Our prayers are that the hand over date will not be postponed and the military will for once heed the call of the masses.

Yes the masses, I say the masses because the masses voted for Obasanjo! I can finally speak my own words on the issue that we all have spoken about till our voices have become hoarse! I think Falae should cover his head in shame. I have nothing against him (and nothing for Obasanjo I must add) but I believe for him to say that 17 million people that voted for Obasanjo (more than Abiola's 14 million O!) is a farce is carrying it too far. Even the international observers have said that the irregularities occurred to favor both parties and they cannot say that it affected the overall results, moreover even if, lets be wild and say that 2 million of his votes are fraudulent and cancelled that will still leave him with at least 5 million votes ahead of Falae taking into consideration that all the votes will be cancelled at a suspected polling center. It is disheartening to see that even at this crucial point in time that the Yoruba Leaders (to whom I belong) cannot get there act together after all these years! As a person in Falae's own hometown has said, it was a good contest, now let us all rally around Obasanjo to see that he does not go astray!

But no, Falae and his fellow Cohorts want to pull out of the election and cause more katakana! Have we forgotten that half bread is better that none (who said we are getting half-bread anyway!?). We have a southern president for the first time in 20 years and some of us just cannot shut up and be satisfied! Falae accepting defeat and becoming a very good opposition leader to keep the government of Obasanjo in check may even be a more important duty to perform, than run the country itself (we can see how much Tony Blair did to make John Major act! and eventually booted him out! ).

I call on all sane thinking Yoruba leaders, to prevail on Falae to not cause any unnecessary Wahala, we have had enough. The work ahead is too plenty, to tough and trying we have a nation to rebuild! One foreign reporter has said that Nigeria has so many problems it is a mystery that anyone is interested in the Job of leading such a troubled country! It is much wiser to have all hands on deck, including the opposition. Let us all drink the peppersoup from the same pot, we shall then see how hot it is and contribute our own to make it sweet again.

From:"Kola Owolabi"

Without the shadow of a doubt, the foundation of anything makes all the difference. No matter how beatiful a building is, if it is built on a foundation that cannot support its structure, the building will eventually collapse. The building would become a disaster waiting to happen.

From all intents and purpose, I feel the results of the election declared by INEC are very spurious and unverifiable. If we elect leaders who come into power on a foundation of fraudulent election results, we would not have any justification to hold them accountable to the people. I had no doubt in my mind that General Olusegun Obasanjo would win the election between him and Chief Olu Falae, but I believe it is not enough to just say that the election is free and fair, we need to also show it to be free and fair.

The path of honour, integrity and accountability demands that INEC should give the facts to the populace to verify their actions. At each ward or polling booths where elections took place, party agents and some of the electorates were present when the results were declared at their levels. INEC should provide us with the figures from the ward level and let us see how all the figures were built up through Local Government area to States. If INEC can do this, they would have contributed in no small way to improve conduct of election and declaration of results in this Country.

From:"BERNARD C. NWAIWU"

Fellow countrymen,

We may have just witnessed, yet, another exercise in futility. Pardon me, but, I have continued to wonder if this election (read selection) will be a way out of the endless corruption that has destroyed our country or just an entrance to yet another dream. Time will Tell.

Ironically, I congratulate the President elect, General Obasanjo not because he has won a free and fair election, but because as the international observers led by Jimmy Carter have said, all the political parties had engaged in some election irregularities in their respective strongholds. In otherwords, the rigging by Obasanjo and his supporters and Falae and his supporters cancels each other out. He who comes to equity must come with clean hands!

As Frantz Fanon In his book The Wretched Of The Earth once said, " Every generation, out of relative obscurity, shall discover its mission; either fulfill it or betray it." Obasanjo may not be the "Messiah" (to borrow from his description of Abiola after the annulment of the June 12, 1993, election ), but he is certainly in a position now to, at the minimum, be John the Baptist, the forerunner to the Messiah! I urge all well meaning Nigerians, irrespective of their political inclinations, to accept the result of this selection, sorry, election and give peace and democracy a chance. The worst form of democracy, in my humble opinion, is still better than the most benevolent military dictatorship.

Once again, we have an opportunity for the political class to show maturity. To show that they can lead. History will not forgive their generation if the fumble this opportunity once again as the have in the past. Not that Nigerian Politicians are known to care about History and its judgment, but they may well be reminded that those that make peaceful change impossible make violent change inevitable. Let us judge Obasanjo by his conduct and action or inaction in office.

To "Uncle Sege" you have been given an opportunity that other Nigerian Leader has ever had. You have been given what any politician will die for: A SECOND CHANCE! You have told us that you did not forget any thing at Aso Rock. But if you did, let it be at Dodan Barracks. You can cleanse Aso Rock of its image as the bedrock of corruption and the seat of power of the Northern Caliphate to its proper image as the Nigerian Peoples House and an epitome of excellence, good governance, transparent honesty, integrity and Honor. Every Nigerian Should be made to belong in you government. This is not the time for the Victor take all mentality of Nigerian politics. We must be proud again to be Nigerians. Duty, Honor and Country Must mean something to every Nigerian. You can lead our country out of poverty. You can lead our country out of corruption, Illiteracy, Ignorance, Military dictatorship, tribalism, marginalisation of certain ethnic groups and most of the ills that have befallen our great Nation since military rule; even if you don't take us to the promise land. Much has been given to you. Much is expected of you. You cannot afford to fail!

I know the work and trials ahead will not be easy, but let us prove to the world that an African nation can use much less time than America and most European nations to achieve a prominent position in the world; and can thrive in peace and prosperity, and harmony amongst its various ethnic groups. WE CAN DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!

I am here by congratulating the entire people of Nigeria for their recent and smooth democratic election of the African great Country's Representatives head of government. I wish it could have been more of the peoples choice than dictatorial choice according to vast media report across the globe.

However, my special thanks goes to our country's President - elect, General Olusegun Obasanjo for his victorious outing.

I hope that my fellow Nigerians will rally round around you and your government to direct the Economy, Political and Social aspect of our country Nigeria to a positive direction so that the people of country will enjoy the fruits of their labor; for you are elected to serve and not to be a MASTER; for you are elected to lead and direct and not to destroy; for this is the greatest country in our continent "AFRICA" that every nation across the glob are looking at; that if we go so goes Africa. You must remember that our people "Nigeran People", has suffered, that its about time we should start enjoying our wealth of economy. We try to get our People to direct and control our economic resources and their profits and make the visitors work on our directives.

Mr. President-elect, you must understand that your government will determine our country's constitutional foundations with your law maker which I surggest that should have root oriented to all our cultural life style and not to reflect an imported life style's I am suggesting that constitution is not something we should rush into and make mistakes on, rather we should consult our university center of art and culture across the country to put one together. I would like to work on this voluntarily if I am called upon to participate regardless of my profession as an Engineer.

Thank You and May God bless you.

To all Nigerians I wish to say a million congratulations!!. Even to all those who stood by the sidelines waiting for the electoral process to fail so that they could come up with their well rehearsed statements "I told you it wouldn't work!!"

To Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo I have a simple request. Could you please shed your "General" title for the duration of your stay in office? We have heard too many of it.

And please listen to the voice of the people. Remember the whole wide world is watching all your moves. The black world is hoping and praying that Nigeria would show the way.

Subject:PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION
Date:Tue, 2 Mar 1999 10:47:44 EST

I want to take this opportunity to thank you,Chuck, for the very informative nature of your website.

I have read some reactions on the election results. I truly understand that it takes a while to start believing our leaders after so many years of corruption, deception and oppression of our people. The military in particular, militicians and politicians in general are not believable. However the political elections winding up now has been to many observers, the freest and fairest in the history of our country. We therefore need to allow this transition, while we shouldn't this time seat at the critics table, but be involved by way of constructive contributions and /or criticism. If those of us abroad cannot make an impact in the process, we have failed our people too. We can criticize and condemn persons and the process all we want, if we are not constructive, it does not help the lot of our people. The presidential election has been contested and won. As educated people we must lead the way in accepting the verdict. I read that Olu Falae intends to contest the result. Tell me if there were irregularities, could there not have been some in the South West, with those pretty high figures declared. The result I have seen showed over 6 million votes difference. Is Falae trying to say those were as a result of rigging or he is wanting to bring commotion.

Obasanjo handed over to civilians in 1979. For 20 years he has been a civilian. Are we saying he hasn't learnt enough those years to see areashe made mistakes. He has been outspoken against the rulers after civil rule, unlike the other ex-rule.

I come to Obasanjo's defence because there has really been no case against him apart from he is ex-military. Everywhere in the world, the military is an elite class and they are close to power and in many instances they lead governments. In USA there have been general(s) that became president. Currently, in Israel an army general is challenging the incumbent. Lets pray that Obasanjo leads by principles and not as military stooge He has clout in international circles wwe should benefit from.

LONG LIVE THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA.

MAY GOD BLESS YOU ALL AND PROSPER YOU IN YOUR ENDEAVORS.

I Ademola Odunfa, M.D. based in Jamaica hereby congratulate General Olusegun Obasanjo(retired) on his success in the recently concluded presidential elections in Nigeria.

I sincerely hope that with this victory, we can hope for better things to come out of Nigeria and that many Nigerians who were driven to flee the country due to adverse economic and political situations would be able to return in due time.

I also urge Chief Olu Falae to accept his defeat in the spirit of good sportmanship and pull his party together to mount a formidable opposition and also to prepare grounds for future elections participation.

Finally I congratulate Odili.net for putting this forum together. It was well thought of.

Odili, thank you for this publication, please send a copy of the reaction 99 to the Nigeria office of the President, this web page will help him.

Dear Mr. President,

Congratulation for your recent victory. Though the results were received with mixed feelings by many Nigerians, but it is left for you to prove yourself worthy to lead Nigeria into the new millennium, to serve and not to whip, to forgive and not to relatiate, to integrate the people and not to disintegrate, to listen to your heart and to rule with your head.

Mr. President, there is a big task before you, look before you leap. Nigeria is the world 6th richest in Oil production, yet we import gasoline, and the people live from hand to mouth. Our external debt is $40 billon dollars, whereas some Nigerians have billions in swiss and Lebanon.

Meet with all Nigerians, both at home and abroad, listen to their problems and ask them how to solve the Nigeria problems, and you will leave a foot print in the sands of time. May God give you the wisdom of Solomon, the understanding of David, and the knowledge of Daniel to rule over his people, the nation Nigeria, amen.

Subject:Congratulations, Matthew Aremu Olusegun Obasanjo
Date:Tue, 2 Mar 1999 04:06:57 -0800 (PST)

Netters:

The BBC just reported that Obasanjo has taken a commanding lead over Falae as the results of yesterday's presidential election have trickled in. It is perhaps in order to congratulate Matthew Aremu Olusegun Obasanjo on his victory. The irregularities reported in parts of the country are in my view not of such magnitude as capable of changing the outcome.

Obasanjo contested against a capable Falae. And won. The Nigerian people have spoken. Obasanjo is their choice. We must respect the voice of the people and congratulate Obasanjo on his victory.

The beauty of democracy is this: there is always another opportunity. In four years, Nigerians will have another opportunity to elect the Country's No. 1 tenant. And Falae and his group may go at it again.

For the Yoruba people, disappointed as some of them are, there are important lessons to be learned. Indeed the lesson is for all aspiring Nigerian leaders. To win the national office, you do not need the support of your home state, the support of members of your ethnic group to succeed. (This is a validation of the true and original Zikist idea of Pan-Nigerianism.) Obasanjo's victory will reduce the suffocating grip of ethnicism. As Abiola's victory should have done. The Abiola and Obasanjo victories should inform reforms within the AD and in Yoruba politics as a whole. Insularity is too limiting an approach.

The task of fighting for and protecting democracy in Nigeria has just begun. Each of us must protect what we have now as jealously as a hen protects her eggs. Misplaced militancy on the part of elected officials hastened the fall of Shonekan's ING and ushered in the murderous Abacha. We must teach our politicians to cast off the habit of always calling on the military to take over once things do not work their way. Similarly, the Press must recognize and remain faithful to the idea that the solution to civiliam misrule is another election, not another military intervention. We each must recognize that we all have a responsibility to defend and protect democracy.

While we congratulate Obasanjo, we must not forget that the struggle for democracy, for a country governed by law, a country where no citizen's rights to full full citizenship is either circumscribed or abbreviated, has just begun.

Dear Fellow Nigerians,

Certainly, the Presidential Election in Nigeria Has come and gone. The winner will be celebrating his victory now; while the loser, understandably, is protesting all over the place.

However, it should be understood these are very difficult times. And it calls for no celebration. Nigeria and Nigerians have never had it so bad. The Winner should rather brace up for the challenges ahead, while the loser should realise it is high time all hands are put on deck to salvage the country and put her back on the right track, in the interest of the generality of Nigerians.

It just can't be bussiness as usual.

This is the time to put Nigeria back on the path to Peace and Progress. Sincerely, there is no place like home.

I am glad at the successful conclusion of the elections. What is more, it went without widespread irregularities. Yes there may be some cases of vote rigging, but the overall picture is good.

I may not be Obasanjo's fan having experienced the high handedness of his Federal Commissioner for Education, Col. Ali, but I am eager to see our country return back to the path of normalness.

Obasanjo as President is not the Obasanjo as Head of State who reluctantly accepted leadership when Murtala Muhammed died. This present Obasanjo has matured. This Obasanjo has seen the other side of life. He has expereinced the wrong side of military justice and almost lost his life in jail. He says he is a born again, whatever that means, and I believe.

Between two evils, one as represented by the military and, the other as represented by the retired military establishement, I opt for the latter.

We know that the Jos PDP convention that brought up Obasanjo, instead of Ekwueme was manipulated. For now, let us all give our new President all the support we can to see if we can keep our militians where they belong:the barracks. I think this Obasanjo of 1999 xcan move Nigeria forward. He can make us proud. Let's support him.

Thank you.

FELLOW NIGERIANS,

Lets us pull together, and make Nigeria a very safe place to live, the reasons that Nigeria is such a #1 scarry place to live right now is simply because, majority of the wonderful Nigerians have chosen other countries to grow and ignore our duties to make our home a better place, we have totaly ignore the elders who made ways for us to be the best that we can be, and left behind our brothers to fight dirty politicians without any tools, our young sisters and children to submit to imorals demands simply because of the bad economy, ourselves to believe that the best that can do is subject to another human being simply because we have impose the stupid ideas called our culture on ourselves without any written proof from above, we Nigerian have divided ourselves through religion, tribalism, sexism, and totally live in a decriminating enviroment due to FEAR.

This past weekend isn't a democratic days for us, but a very sad days when my people went through HELL, it will never be joyous until we in abroad participate in making it better place with our education that we intended to come to achive in the first place. Personally for me, it kills me to think about Nigerians working day and night in helping other people to grow, let us share this wonderful opportunities with our fellow men and women back home, and stop congratulate someone that has no knowledge of what our needs are, lets go back and oppose this constant humiliation called human rights abuse from the military, and contribute in making the world a better place. Do you know that if you tried too you could be the next best President of Nigeria.

Na now be the real time to learn wetin be civilian rule for Naija.Be say the people don choose who them want. And for me self I totally agree wit the result for the election.because, na Obasanjo fit successful bring we back into the world wey Abacha give we bad name. Na the only Nigerian leader, besides myself wey i no dey power hungry. We all remember say even the first time him run the country,he no take over wit guns like the rest of them. And plus say,na him te only man wey stand up publicly condemn all him big army friends like Babangida and Abacha them for Human rights abuses and all the brutally for the country.

As man wey don suffer the abuse and torture under Abacha regime just like the common Nigerian,I trust say him dey for better position now to understand wetin civilian abuse really mean. And I trully believe say one of him major task go be to restructure their Military organizations to reflect the true democratic system wey Soldier go respect the right of every Nigerian citizen from Big man to small man.And any soldier or serviceman wey molest any civilian go face serious conseqence just like any other common person, plus they sack am for him army work.

Anywey, for my own true opinion, I like to see am disolve the Military active forces. Then train every Nigerian citizen and make am as a Reserve Seviceman. This is one best way to tottally eliminate citizen abuse in the hands of servicemen and plus this go help prevent future coups.

Another better way to stop and prevent cilvilian abuse for Naija be to disolve the present Police forces, then recruit and retrain a new Police force wit the help of American Police agencies. Na the best way to help eliminate rampant criminal activities within the law enforcement agencies.

Finally, I thank Webmaster for making this site for everybody express himself without fear of arrest and summon. Thank you all my fellow Nigerians wey dey commit in the everlasting fight to finally bring Democracy for our Nation the Great Nigeria.

Hi! Web master,

I would like to congratulate General Olusegun Obasanjo for his victory in the saturday Feb. 27, 1999 presidential elections held in Nigeria. I want to thank all the international organizations including all the friendly countries for their gesture of goodwill for participating in the historic event in Nigeria and for Nigeria.

Everybody may have been aware of the long road that has been taken leading to this end. It is also quite possible for different people to take different perspectives on the results. Given all the waiting both local and international for this important step, it would be appropriate to a deep breath and a possible sigh of release hoping that this could very well be the beginning of good things to come to Nigeria. After all an average person both in and outside Nigeria knows what this single first means to Nigeria.

Part of the Democratic process is the ability of the participants in the process to be willing to accept the overall results of the process, which is a way of accommodating the heterogeneous views of the people which part and parcel of Democracy. I suggest that all the differences now should wisely give way to common consensus which is a necessary ingredient for the country to move forward with its much needed business of its people.

First, from here in abroad I think we have to congratulate Odili Net for a well done job. This Nigeria Web is a great service to all of us. I am quite sure that Nigerians are very proud of this. We think we are well represented in the industry. This is our own thing.

Second, I congratulate our President elect Mr. Olusegun Obasanjo who is by all means qualified to be our President. He is a civilian at the moment of election and by right and virtue of democracy and as a Nigerian citizen he is no less than it is required by any criteria or standard of any civilized country. We witnessed this here in USA when General Haig contested in the Presidential election. He was not the first and surely will not be the last.

It is time we have to put behind us the old politics that did not win us better life. We have to do it like other civilized countries in order to gain our respect. When the election is held in a country like Nigeria where the tools and equipments for perfect election processes is lacking we should expect plus or minus in the result. As long as we can at the end come up with the solution for a winner, then we should just accept it and let us move on to the time when we can afford tools and equipments to have future perfect results.

Finally, let us rally around the President elect for the government best possible under him, that will lead us to prosperity. Nigeria is lucky at this time, let us make the best of it. God bless our country, our people.

God bless Chuck Odili for more stuff. (Amen)

Irrespective of the fact that Obasanjo was a former soldier, it is obvious to any one who cares that Nigeria can no longer be ruled as has been done in the past. Obasanjo must learn how to govern by listening to the yearnings and aspirations of the various ethnic groups and allow them to develop at their own pace. Any individual or group who think they can dominate or hoodwink others into believing that they share the aspirations of all Nigerians while protecting the interest of a particular group will quickly accelerate the demise of Nigeria.

Chuck Odili:

You are a true Nigerian. I think your accurate and unbiased reports have shown how new breed Nigerians can bring about change to our GREAT COUNTRY, NIGERIA.

I sincerely believe that the just concluded elections has shown to the entire world how difficult the democratization process really is. In a vast country such as Nigeria, it would be silly to conclude that there would be no election improprieties.

Based on published results, I would suggest that Chief Falae should concede and congratulate Gen. Obasanjo. If he continues to protest the results, knowing how things happen in Nigeria, the uniformed men would use that as a pretense to NULLIFY the election results; this would take us back to square one. So, for the sake of peace and for the benefit of all deprived, marginalized and incarcerated Nigerians, I urge Chief Falae to swallow his pride and respect the results of the election.

There is no doubt in anyone's mind that there was rampant violation of election rules in some polling stations during last Saturday's election. But, for the benefit of our dear nation (NIGERIA), let us all pull together and move forward.

Currently Nigeria is the laughing stock of our neighbors in the subregion and the entire world due to rampant corruption and unchecked mismanagement of our vast resources. This perennial affliction should be stopped to enable us all move our great nation forward.

Congratulations to Chuck Odili.

Now that the Nigerian electorate have spoken, I want to take this opportunity to implore all well-meaning Nigerians and friends to support the new government that will be sworn in on May 29, 1999. While we all undoubtedly had our preferences for the various elected offices, we should in the end accept the outcome of the elections and move on with the task of building our 'great' nation. On a personal note Mr. President-elect Obasanjo, congratulations. You have your work cut out for you. What with the state of the economy, education, unemployment, treasury, ports, airports, prisons, agriculture, infrastructure and most dear to my heart, communications systems. These challenges seem daunting. I hope God gives you the moral fortitude to make the tough decisions that will improve the lot of our 'great' nation. In the same vein, Mr. Olu Falae, congratulations. You fought a galant, albeit losing fight. Accept the defeat with dignity and let the healing of our nation begin. You will no doubt have more opportunities in the future to render your services to our nation. Since discovering it sometimes in 1998, I have visited the site almost on a daily basis in order to keep abreast of developments in Africa in general, and Nigeria in particular. Mr. Odili, you are an invaluable asset to Nigeria and Nigerians in the diaspora! Keep up the good work.

Fact: Those who forget history are condemned to repeat it. Nigerians, no doubt, are perhaps the most vibrantly intellectual collectivity on earth. As has been stated time and time again, it's potential is boundless. But in our haste to move forward into the future, our people and leaders must not make the same mistakes that others with similar histories have had. It is a miracle, judging Nigeria's history, that the fate that has befallen many other African countries has not befallen us. Maybe it is true that God is indeed Nigerian (in which case, I'm sure we can all agree that he is Urhobo and probably from Sapele). However, we should always be reminded of what happens to an ordered society which has been mis-administered by it's former colonial power, and in which the struggles of power took on a very virulent form of expression. If you think it cannot happen in Nigeria, you are very wrong. And we must remind ourselves of this everyday. I dislike Obasanjo, and I believe only in the Great Termite who rules the universe. But today I prayed seriously to our common God for this man I detest so much. He will need God's help. God help him. God help us. Long live the Kingdom of Songhai and the resultant federation of Nigeria. We will understand it better by and by..... and if you haven't read it already...

A few quotes from Philip Gourevitch's excellent book: "We wish to inform you that tomorrow we ill be killed with our families."

[John Hanning] Speke: "...judging from the progressive state of the world, one is led to suppose that the African must soon either step out from his darkness, or be superseded by a being superior to himself" Speke believed that a colonial government--"like ours in India"--might save the "negro" from perdition, but otherwise he saw "very little chance" for the breed.

The traditional hill-by-hill administrative structures which had offered Hutus their last hope for at least local autonomy were systematically dismantled, and Tutsi elites were given nearly unlimited power to exploit Hutus' labor and levy taxes against them.

Four months before the revolution began, the Mwami who had reigned for nearly thirty years, and was still popular with many hutus, went to Burundi to see a Belgian doctor for treatment of veneral disease. The doctor gave him an injection, and the Mwami collapsed and died apprently from allergic shock. But a deep suspicion that he had been poisoned took hold among Rwanda's Tutsis, further straining their fraying relationship with their erstwhile Belgian sponsorts.

TO GOD BE THE GLORY FOR GREAT THINGS HE HAS DONE. WHAT HE DOES FOR OTHER, HE WILL DO FOR YOU!

Let me first thank God for answering prayer. Congratulations to our new President elect. Rt. Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo, who believes in God. I truthfully believe that Almighty God protected you while you were in prison.

All Nigerians who love their Country should come together rolling up their sleeves for Nation building. The New President can not build our Nation all by himself. It will take all fellow Nigerians together to build our Nation. We need to continue to pray for the newly elected President of our Counry as he builds and strengthens the structure of our communities from the local Gov't, State Gov't, and Judiciary, as he gives them the power to enforce their authority, As a believer in the word of God.

(St. Mark 11:21-26); (Ezekiel 37:1-17) Let all Nigerians read and listen to the word of God. Our Country is like a fig tree and the old dry bones. For 39 years we have been doing our own thing. We all have to believe that it is now time to put our faith in God.

Hi Webmaster,

I want to thank not only the winner and the 'loser' in the last election. But all Nigerians both home and abroad for any form of support. In the process of democritisation of our beloved beautiful country, it has been a long winding road to this day.

We must now dump any partisan attitude, ethnic or religious beliefs and come out to build a lasting system that our children and children's children can enjoy and build upon -- a formidable and realible system will bring all her sons and daugthers from far and wide to rebuild our dear country then we can reclaim our position in the whole of Africa and the entire globe.

Congratulations to all!

Thanks
