From:"Dennis O. Balogu"

Dear President-elect Obasanjo:

Please accept my fervent congratulation for being elected the President of Nigeria. As former President of the United States, Ronald Reagen puts it, by electing you, Nigerians citizens have done their duty and your own problem has just begun. I believe that you will be able to solve the problem of corruption in Nigeria and give a new life to investments for revamping our economy. The propblem of providing food for our increasing population must be tackled immediately in order to give our down trodden population a breathe of new life. Hence Our country needs good Agricultural Management, Production, Processing and Distribution systems and policy to provide food for our population. An immediate mobilization of our professional agricultural and business community is very to provide a short-term and long-term food production system for Nigeria. I believe that your several years of farming experience will be very vital in mobilizing national and international food production industries and professionals toward achieving this objective.

I believe that Nigeria has enough trained professionals and production specialists to help in this endeavor. Food must be produced at affordable prices in order for us to have a healthy and peaceful nation.

Again, congratulation and may God be with you and Nigeria

Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria!

From:"Niran Oluwaranti"

Hello Chuck,

Thanks for a nice job of keeping Nigeria informed on happening in the Country.

The Election has come and is going, there is a winner and there is a loser, the sooner we accept this the better. Falae claims there was rigging , yes, there was I'm not contesting that, but he can't convince me that only one party was involved in the rigging. Both sides are equally guilty, you can rig only in places you have control and I'm sure APP/AD did theirs where they could.

The main issue is a Winner has emerge and this give Nigeria an opportunity for a new dawn, I'm allowing myself full optimism that June 12, 1993 will not happen because, the military has succeeded in enthroning to Nigeria "Militrocracy". We will accept it and I'll like to Congratulate all Nigeria for this New Dawn, I believe General Obasanjo is a good student of History and will learn from the mistake of the past so that we can truly witness the Dawn of a New Era.

We all have a stake in all this, the Era of being quiet on National issue is over, we must all the ready to monitor the going on in government. Fight the deadly evil of Corruption and Nepotism. Nigeria do not need 200 years to get to where America is today all we need in good Leadership which invariably will translate into good follower.

Please Nigeria let's give it all it will take to be where we rightfully belong "A prosperous Nation".

To Chief Falae, no doubt, you are good. Nigerian love and Appreciates you, indeed you are a gallant Warrior, but, thank God your place is secured in the good book of Nigeria history, we cannot forget your contributions. But let us move forward, Enough is Enough.

And our Our Elected President, yes victory is sweet, everyone loves a winner, your antecedents were really against you among your people, you know as I know that we say in our land "Ile labo sinmi oko", you have a rear opportunity to rewrite your history, right the wrongs and let your latter end be better than your beginning. Build a Nation where tribe and Religion is of little consequence in getting what one rightfully deserve. Let Justice not only be done, but be sen to have been done.

After all the euphoria of winning, the task ahead is daunting, please by the mercies of God, Give Nigeria a leadership to be proud of.

To all my fellow country outside the boundary of the Nation, we all need to rededicate ourselves to this Task of Nation building.

Chuck, keep up the good work

God bless our Country.

Subject:Thanks Chuck, Thanks Nigeria, Congrats Obasanjo

From:"Dr. Kevin Ibeh"

Much thanks to Chuck Odili for keeping me sufficiently informed about Nigeria for more than three years now. May your days be long. With Nigerians like you, we shall prevail.

It's been gratifying to read decent news about Nigeria since the former head of the occupying force exited to his shallow grave. The successful conclusion of this presidential election is another emphatic plus; may be not quite a glorious moment, but a reminder, if we need any, that Nigeria can work again.

Obasanjo's victory is expected, and he deserves the congratulations of Nigerians who're disposed to offer same - and that includes me. I dare suggest another name who should offer same : Olu Falae. Grandstanding yes, political posturing, may be, but a FEDERAL PROTEST, definitely NO. The cancer of electoral malpracties seriously need to be tackled, but we need to make a real start along the democratic learning curve to have any chance of sanitising the electoral process.

Having been heavily supported by our celebrated 'militicians', Obasanjo comes with as heavy a baggage as can be. My first hope : that he retains the courage of his professed convictions. I cannot agree more with him : Nigeria cries out for leadership in all spheres, not the least of which is the seemingly unwinnable WAR against CORRUPTION. But here is the clincher - if the leader shuns corruption, 50% of the job is done. Obasanjo said that, and in the name of Nigeria, we hold him to that sensible standard. For the sake of Nigeria, I badly want to believe that Abacha's gulag was a real transforming (Damascusan) experience for Obasanjo. We wait and see.

Finally, even with the best of intentions, Obasanjo cannot give us democracy in Nigeria. Not also can the so-called political class. The struggle to reclaim the inalienable democratic mandate of every Nigerian has, at least since the early 1990s, been led by a courageous press and the human rights groups. Whatever reservations one may wish to express against these groups, the principle of their struggles remain the realistic way forward. We absolutely need to empower Nigerians to claim ownership of Nigeria; to ask questions if things go wrong; to protest if their intelligence is insulted by over-inflation of contract values; and to stauchily demand an answer if paid-for-contracts are either abandoned or haphazardly executed. More importantly, we need decent informed groups to teach Nigerians how to protest, without looting and brigandage! Until we reach a stage where corrupt public officials are forced to resign over crimes against Nigeria; until we get to a stage where fraudulent contractors are forced by citizens' action to go back and do a better job, until....we cannot claim to have a democratic Nigeria.

You may be right if you regard the above as a tall order, but that should be our vision and our irreducible minimum. I hope the cause of real democracy would benefit from the stewarship of Matthew Aremu Olusegun Obasanjo. And I hope that he allows the democratic project to thrive, without neglecting the 'comatose' Nigerian economy. More on that ...

Subject:ONE LAST CHANCE
Date:Mon, 01 Mar 1999 11:11:35 PST
From:"Emmanuel Uzo Obi"

It has always been my belief that Nigeria needed and experienced and detribalized leader. The election of President Obasanjo no doubt will help build the bridge between the north and the south, between the civilians and the military and also between the haves and have nots. His experience in civilian life the past 20 years and also his imprisonment by Abacha, I believe, has more than adequately prepared him for this job. However, he faces serious challenges as this is a democratic setting where he has to deal with the national assembly.

The process of political healing can now begin and I think this government can serve the purpose of the much talked about national conference. Nigerians should now hold Obasanjo down to the 'truth and reconciliation committee' he talked about.

Obasanjo now must deal with ethnic relations and the state indigene politics where Nigerians lose their jobs just because they are not an indigene of the state where the reside. In short, there are many tasks before Obasanjo, many of which Abubakar refused to tackle and some of which his government created.

Finally, the single most crucial task facing Obasanjo now, is that of internal security. Most of the mischievious elements are still very much around, particularly supporters of Sani Abacha.

This is our last chance.

Congratulations on a job very well done!!!!!!!!

On this issue of the presidential election, much as I believe that Nigeria's problem were not created by Babangida nor Abacha alone, they were created by a succession of the leaders we have had in our country including the president elect.

I find it most unfortunate that the people that got us into this mess, that have made it possible for the IMF and World Bank to dictate to us how to spend our national resources and manage our government after 39 years of our so called independence are back in the saddle of leadership of our country. For the avoidance of any doubt General Obasanjo's government took the first jumbo loan in our country when a little belt tightening and prudent economic management would have sufficed.

Be that as it may the man has won an election, whether or not free and fair is irrelevant because an illegitimate regime organized the process and the Nigerian people have legitimatized it by their participation, he should be allowed to rule and I make bold to say that our country is in a lot of trouble unless and unless IBB and Abacha's family are made to cough out every last cent they stole.

The reason for this is because in every society criminal acts are not condoned be the acts be perpetuated by rapists, armed robbers, murderers or even statesmen a society that refuses to correct this societal miscreants has laid the foundation stone for its own doom. This is why the country has become a lawless place since our government told us on June 23, 1993 that they absolutely support injustice and therefore Nigerians can (and have) commit any crime if they believe they will get away with it. He will not do anything about our two most notorious rulers as they put him in power to make sure of that. The country is in a comatose state and a fresh injection of the stolen funds into our system would have helped put us back to where we were just around when Shagari left. Which is not a lot but it is a far cry from here.

I WEEP FOR NIGERIA AS THE ARMY OF OCCUPATION HAS REFUSED TO GO AWAY. MARK IT DOWN FEBRUARY 27, 1999 IS THE DAY WE FINALLY GAVE UP OUR INDEPENDENCE.

Congratulations President-elect Rtd. General Olusegun Obasanjo. My advice to you is to acknowledge that God has done His own wonderful part in the journey of your life. Imaging when you are sitting lonely in that isolated prison, do you ever for once think you will come out of it alive talkless of becoming the most powerful man in Africa once again. By doing what is right for our Nation, the world will glorify our Father in heaven through you. Let God be given the glory. May God help you in the service ahead.

On the election last saturday, I will like to extend my congratulations to all Nigerians that made it possible.

I hope Obasanjo and all PDP executives will realise that this is just the begining. The effort to rebuild the country must include all, both the winners and the lossers. In reality there are no lossers in this exercise. It is a WIN, WIN situation for the country.

I pray that God reside in all of us and allow the APP/AD members to accept the result in good faith.

Many Thanks to our server Odili.Net for the job well done keep it up.

To the people of Nigeria:

Let the past quietly go BUT... it should be our lesson. This big Nation should now shine and prove what it can mean to the world. Let's unite and work together in harmony NOW THAT DEMOCRACY is meant to be dwelling among us.

Arise and shine for the light has come! Arise and shine for the light has come!.

Let us forget our differences and look up to the common cause and develop our great nation for our benefit that of the generations to come.

Peaceful negations are a good example as opposite to blood shedding as at the end of the the true solutions always comfort the negotiation table not though the the butchering and torturing of humankind against itself.

Thank you for all for loving peace. Hoping to be talking in other different terms very soon.

Dear Chuck,

Thanks for providing this avenue for gathering news and keeping in touch with our homeland. Yes, I am one of those who visit your web site daily, and I am very pleased and satisfied with each visit and hope other surfers are equally pleased. I am especially thankful for your providing the presidential hopeful websites.

Now Gen. Obasanjo has won the election (though not my first choice) I hope all Nigerians will give him the support to lift Nigeria up. Perhaps some one will introduce him to this site. I am pretty sure he will learn few things like being tolorant to those who did not vote for him and not to squander the opportunity given to him by those who voted for him.

I have resolved in my mind that whichever way the winning tide swerve it is still a victory, all I am praying for is that God should give the other parties the needed heart of reconciliation, so as to realize that the best thing for a possible way forward for Nigeria is to become one.

I am talking about a re-alliance, if it was that possible for the "APP/AD" it should not be that difficult for "APP/AD/PDP". And that is the only way forward. AD was able to forget What "APP" stood for {i.e. Abacha's Peoples Party}and they worked with them. I don't think it is going to be any worse working with "PDP" {Promulgated Dictators Party / Military Officer's Party}.

Congratulations to Olusegun Aremu Obasanjo our new President, I pray that God gives you all necessary wisdom and memory so as remember how others that failed forgot that "If God does not watch the city, the guards wakes up for nothing".

We should not forget the relentless effort Obansanjo gave the country when he was Head of state. His program OPERATION FEED THE NATION was the best program ever introduced to Nigerians.

My people especially those of us that live abroad. We have seen the beauty of democracy. This century is almost over and we are still not developed. Let's take examples from countries that embraced democracy and enjoyed the support of the world at large.

Chief Olu Falae, I live in Florida, USA. Our present Governor is the Son of Former President of the United States. Four years ago he contested for governor and lost. He congratulated the winner and waited for the next election. He contested again and won. That is democracy, love your country. It doesn't make you less of a man. You are the greatest man in our history if you don't drag this issue to court. Embrace our democracy. We don't want to remember you next election as the man that lost and could not accept it in the next four years.

God bless Nigeria!

Fellow Nigerians,

I wish to congratulate you all for a well job done with the successful(?) of the Feb 27 Presidential elections. I urge you not to celebrate yet though. The big battle for true democracy is yet to commence.

Gen. Obasanjo may have won, but it is really the establishment. Sometimes you have to tolerate a little evil to allow good to flourish. We must remain vigilant and demand accountability.

Chief Olu Falae, you fought gallantly and are a true democrat. You are the leader we truly deserve. Remember one thing though, good things comes to those who wait!

Keep up the good work Chuks!

Congratulations to all Nigerians and to Gen Obasanjo.

Nigerians have suffered enough and the good Lord is making a change in her fortunes for the better.

Democracy alone is not enough... It needs to be nurtured and there is no better way of feeding and keeping democracy alive like good accomodating governance.

We can all render our own little assistance by going home to set up industries, no matter how small. To make Garri, Akpu, or bottled water. We will in the end be giving power to the people by reducing armed robbery and all other sorts of crime.

It is not as difficult as you might think! A candle making factory costs about $500 to set up, Soap bars manufacturing for about $600, Many more industrial projects can be established for under $2000. If you give a man fish everyday, you are keeping him alive but if you teach him how to fish, you have given him a livelihood. Set up a few of these projects at home and it will be supporting not only your family but Nigeria.

May the road be smooth for all you Naijas out there and let us go take on the world!

Chuck:

You have clearly expressed my sentiments by your quotes that I have pasted below. Thank you very much for the incredible service offered to us through your web site. May I suggest that all these responses be collated and sent to Mr. Obasanjo for consideration. I offer to pay for the expense of getting everything to him, if you want me to do so. Chuck, you are great ---- "more grease to your elbows"

"It is convincing that Obasanjo will emerge winner of this exercise to choose a true "transition president" to civilian rule. Judging from comments and expressed rationale for voting for Obasanjo, his return is still a military rule but hopefully that which will help wipe the nectar of militicianism from the military's lips, forever. That is the least of the tasks ahead of him. He also has the unenviable responsibility to redeem the military's misadventure into our lives. Let's give him this chance and come "2007" we the "New Breed Nigerians" will take over, for good."

If Mr. Obasanjo is as smart as we may want to give him credit for, he would listen to the "pulse of the entire Nigerians" and NOT just dance to the tunes of the puppeteers who may have placed him there, if indeed that is the case!

Now is the time for all Nigerians from everywhere to think of nation-building and to make contributions to the success of our mother-land. The message is loud and clear to Mr. Obasanjo, let us all do all we can to "help" him. Helping him in this surmountable task is helping Nigeria.

Subject:A Prayer for Olusegun Obasanjo From All Nigerians
Date:Mon, 1 Mar 1999 08:00:34 EST

I strongly belief that God wants to use Obasanjo for good in Nigeria. For Obasanjo to have accepted the draft when in fact the treasury has been drained by the looters and oil revenues are not forth coming as used to be, was a true act of a patriot soldier general who wants to save his nation. Now that "they" have messed the nation up, it is time for this patriot general to clean up. Obasanjo have all the needed ingredients to surprise both sides of Nigerian equations and clean up "their mess." But my fear is that will Nigerians look to themselves in the mirror? All Nigerians have been part of Nigerian problems and they must suum up courage to be part of solutions. I also have to appeal to all Nigerians to prayer for Obasanjo's life. The history of Abiola who died in the hands of his best friends should not be repeated in Nigeria.

I wish to congratulate you for a job well done in building this site. It takes a lot of guts, sacrifice and determination to actualize and sustain this kind of adventure. Thanks for all the good work and the labor. I, like multitude other Nigerians, see your site as a one-stop-shop for news on our fatherland. BRAVO !!!!

The elections have come and hopefully gone. While I am not entirely satisfied with the exercise due to all the electoral malpractices that have been reported by International Observers, which was a far cry from the clean bill they gave to the last election held in 93, I want to add my voice to those of the well meaning Nigerians that have surmized that we accept the result, notwithstanding its imperfection. We should realize that the bane of our country apart from the bastardization by the now unpopular military is the general attitude of the average Nigerian politician. Their credo had always been that -- "If I can't have it nobody else can have it". Obasanjo, the presumed winner of the current election is very guilty of this. This was what destroyed the last presidential election. If the opposition party had insisted to the military that they accepted the results, Babangida will have found it difficult to sustain the annulment and we would have been singing another song now. Look where the attitude eventually led us ----.

I particularly did not and still do not like the idea of having an ex-military running for the Presidency, especially not in the first election, if the military really wanted to show us that they mean well for the country. Obasanjo should have gracefully rejected the nomination and if the PDP still wanted someone from the south as their flag bearer, I believe there are more credible Southerners in the party that they could bestow the job on. If this had happened, we would have trully established a 3 Party System with membership cutting across diverse groups. But what happened? One party is now being seen as the party of the military and the others are in an alliance to stop them. This is not good for the health of our national polity.

Well, as I mentioned earlier, it is time to move on. We should congratulate whichever 'civilian' is 'elected' and get the uniform guys out of the way. The next goal is to get the political machineries institutionalized. This is the beginning of something we can build on. Eventually there will be realignment of the political forces within the country and every group will find its level and the military might eventually be confined to the place they belong for good. We should remember that it is a lot easier to get a civilian president out of office than to get rid of a military dictator. Our experience over the years have shown this to be true.

Congratulations once again and I wish all fellow Nigerians well in this new dispensation. We want a place to call our own and a home that we are proud to come back to.

Dear Chuck,

Every peace-loving and democratic Nigerian will forever be grateful for your "Nigeria Web-Site" that afforded all of us abroad the opportunity to keep track of events at home. We all have a great stake in Nigeria, and no sacrifice is too big to ensure that we come out of the mess Nigeria has been plunged into.

The Elections have come and gone. I join other well-meaning Nigerians in appealing to the winner and loser of the election. Chief Olu Falae should accept the situation (it could not have been otherwise, given the present level of political literacy and maturity of our people) and join hands in rebuilding Nigeria from now. To former military Head of State, now the "President Elect" General (retd.) Olusegun Obasanjo, I say a big congratulation and pray that God will support and guide you in the enormous task ahead. Date:Mon, 1 Mar 1999 02:04:52 EST

Chuck, thank you for the web, it is a great achievement. My reaction to the election result is in the form of a story, as follows;

There was a country whose ruler was enthroned by the "King Makers" not according to the wishes of all the subjects. They watched him in power, and asked him out of power when they were ready to crown the next King of their choice.

If the previous he had not yeilded to their control, he would probably have had to join his predecessor. He therefore was so submissive that, today out of constraints they want him back to be crowned again. I hear that some of the subjects are rejoicing because they expect a miracle.

I recommend that miracle to Nigerians because among all countries on this planet that needs a miracle, Nigeria comes first. Until then let us watch and pray.

I want to first thank and commend the efforts of Mr Odili on the incredible website for us Nigerians and Africa at large. It is difficult to have Nigeria as a country and with the advancement in technology, the Nigerian government does not have a website where we will all be fraternising from time to time.

But to Mr. Obasanjo, a big congratulation to you, your party, PDP and Nigerians as a whole. Please do not forget that the mandate WE THE PEOPLE OF NIGERIA have given you is to be used fairly, judiciously, and without fear or favour. As a Nigerian from the Delta State, I will like you to seriously adress the pressing issues that confront us. We have suffered for too long. Since the inception of our country.....The advent of petroleum has made our lives unbearable. In the part of the world where I now reside, petroleum brought the people prosperity.......please be the messiah that will start to lead us out of the woods.......

And to Mr Falae, kindly accept defeat in true spirit....it does not help to at this time start another rift in the fabric of our motherland. Yes, the elections were rigged, PDP, APP and AD all rigged the election...I will like you to join hands so that subsequent elections will be better.....

Hi Chuck,

I will like to commend you for the services you have provided on the NigeriaWeb and especially your coverage of the Nigerian election. As much as we all would have loved a clean break from the past with the election of Olu Falae as the president of that great country, this did not come to past. Obasanjo has won and the military will continue to rule Nigeria in disguise, I will like to urge, Olu Falae and his supporters to allow the peace to reign and allow Obasanjo to rule even though we all know that his victory was dubious and premeditated by the coalition of Military, the Northern elites and their western collaborator, we should allow him to rule and hope that the democratic process will eventually usher in a real leader that Nigeria deserves. Olu falae and his supporters should realise that it will take a while for an election to be free and fair in a country like Nigeria where corruption is a way of life, we cannot dissociate the election process from the society in which it is taking place. Finally, I say to all Nigerians, allow Obasanjo to rulu and hopefully in four years we will have a better opportunity to have a real democracy, it is our last opportunity.

Good news, and let's hope that democracy is come to stay. The democratic process is got to start from a point in time, which is now, and go on forever. No matter how unfair it is at the beginning, it is not going to be like that for a very long time. Nigeria will rise again, good people will rise up to take their position in politics, and Nigerians will rise to resist unfairness.

I want to thank you for a wonderful presentation of facts. I was proud to be a Nigerian again. Keep the good job.

Congratulations to all Nigerians, Military and Civilians, we are all Nigerians. It is a shame that with all the education we had overseas, we cannot behave like honorable Dr. Alex Ekwueme who accepted defeat in his party primary election at Jos, and promised to work with the winner. Why can't you do like that AD/APP flag bearer?

We want the army to go back to the barracks forever, yes we will fix this election cancer in future elections. This is a step, we cannot run now. Please, all hands should be on deck. Continue to monitor the elected leaders for us, please. By so doing we all will produce a progressive and a better Nigeria.

I congratulate the people of Nigeria for allowing this historic election to become a reality. I wish to appeal to Chief Olu Falae to accept his defeat gracefully. Granted that some irregularities were reported the fact still remains that Mr Olusegun Obasanjo was distinctly in the lead. Any miguided legal action wil lead to unnecessary prolongation of military rule and frustration of Nigerians. By accepting his defeat Chief Olu Falae would be no less a great and respected leader of our people but would in fact help Nigerians the more.

To the president elect , reconcilliation of different groups in the country is a matter of immediate attention. No law abiding citizen or group should be alienated. The wise saying of our fore fathers shoul be remembered which says ' one tree cannot make a forest.

Let me first all say thank you, Chuck for an excellent job on the information super highway. You have brought Nigeria to us without a cost to us. May God bless and prosper you. I admire your courage and insight! To Olu Falae whom I consider a great statesman, I would say, accept defeat and let things lie. It is not a matter of do or die. I wretched my car campaigning for you in 1992 without getting a penny form any body because I believed then you had a mission. Since you did not realize that mission in 1992 and 1999, take it as an act of God that he did not want to place you there. He enthrones and dethrones kings, and this is according to his goodwill. Engaging in a futile legal battle that will further cause you more heart aches is uncalled for. At least we all know that the elections were rigged by both camps so don't cry wolf when you might be one.

As for the disgruntled elements in NADECCO, the likes of Adesanya, Okpadokun, Afenifere chieftains, whose interest was primordial and not nationalistic, they should learn one lesson, Nigeria has come a long way, no one section can impose a leader on the rest of us. For the likes of Soyinka, Akinrindade, they should enjoy their stolen wealth from previous military regimes and give us a breathing space. We all know what happened when Akirinade was Chief of Army staff under President Shagari and Minister of Industry and Agriculture during in the Babangida's era. As for Soyinka, Nigerians are still waiting for a clean bill from him on the N900 million he managed as the first Director of the Federal Road Safety Corps, a department that was noted for non accountability during his tenure. Nigeria is not for hypocrites like them!

Lastly, let me congratulate Obasanjo. Please remember that Nigeria is your constituency, there should be no room for vengeance. Leave that to God, for he said, "Vengeance is mine and I will repay." Even though the Yoruba nation did not vote you, have this consolation that you lost in Ogun state your home, and won in Ondo State, Falae's home. It is a game of "a prophet has no honor in his house." Rule Nigeria with the fear of God. If I may remind you of history, remember Nebucadnezzar in the Bible and close home, general Sani Abacha, both of them had common attributes and God dealt with them his own way.

To all Nigerians at home and abroad I say, let us stop running down our leaders but give them the support they need. Aluta Conitua, Victoria Acerta!

God bless Nig

Thanks Mr odili for this beautiful website.Hey listen I do not know why people are refferring to 2007,I believe the presidency term is 4 years,I think it should be 2003. Fine, Obasanjo won the elections, let him serve his 4 year term,if Nigerians want him for another term they will re-elect him. Assumming is going to be a rigged-free elections. This should be an important lesson for AD & APP,they should forget about this so called alliance and merge, forget your differences and join hands in one accord. This is the only true way you can defect almight PDP,and win elections in future. I believe 2 party is better so that they could have "equlibrium power" Lastly, right before we all had dreams about these elections, the military Knew what the results would be like. They had their plans. Why did they singled out Obasanjo among the alleged coup plotters. I'm not taking about Diya's group,I'm taking about this Colonel's group in 1995. THINK ABOUT IT!!!!!

From:"SILAS NWANKPA"

Thanks Mr Odili for this web slot.

We as Nigerians should, at least once in the life of the present day generation of youths, witness a transitional election that doesn't wear an acrimonous tag.

I am not a politician but a keen watcher of the situation.

Obasanjo was the natural choice of Nigerians considering the present disposition. I never expected him to win a single vote in the South-west but I knew he was the natural choice of much of the other states.

The North and East would always prefer a moderately disposed candidate than the stuff Falae is made of. Moreso the AD/APP alliance which was founded on selfish reasons would have caused chaos in our body politics.

Did Falae ever dreamt of winning through such a contraption called alliance?. How sincere was he in the alliance anyway?

It would do him no good to site rigging as the reason why he lost. He never had what it takes to win. The rigging may even have been for him to win the votes he surely didn't have.

INEC should investigate allegations of rigging and cancel the voting in such areas affected.

However the margin of defeat for Falae is so wide that it would be utter waste of our precious transition time dwelling on such issues.

Falae should redeem himself from an imminent political disaster by behaving like a proud loser by congratulating his "brother" and steer the politics of the South-west out of their usual acrimony. This is the best oppurtunity in generations for the Yorubas to get their act together. Politics of hate and "wetie" should be gone this time around.

"Falae and your AD brothers the court is in your court. Do you want to push the Yorubas further into political abyss or pull them out of it.?"

The whole world is now looking upon you to make good your promises. We hope your administration will not be the continuation of the discredited military regime.

Wining election won't be meaningful unless some pressing issues are tackled.

There is the Eastern issue -- reparation should be paid Easterners for the pogrom against them by the other Nigerians. Eastern federal employees (especially police officers) fired after the war should be reinstated. How about the issue of 'abandoned property'? How about the Ogonis and the other minorities? Shouldn't Nigerian economic infrastructure be redistributed equitably? Shouldn't Nigerian Federation be renegotiated among the tribes involved? How far can the Northern oligarchy go marginalizing some of the other tribes? This is just to mention a handful of numerous problem the new administration is to face.

Only and only when some of this problems are solved will the true reconciliation commence.

Huuuh! the election has come and gone and a president has been elected in what seems not to be a very free and fair election, but at least we can get the military out of the way. We need to come together as a nation and work on reconstructing our economy. I say congratulation to Obasanjo even though he is a military in civilian clothe but there is always a beginning this is the beginning of the struggle ahead. We need to learn from our past experience and look forward to building a better nation for generations to come after us.

We are set on the part of freedom and democracy. The death of our leaders: Obafemi Awolowo, Nnamdi Azikwe, Pa Ajasin, Ahmadu Bello, Dr. Tai Solarin and others who fought for freedom and a democratic Nigeria, their death and sacrifice shall not be in vain. We are set on a course let us not look back to the past but rather focus on the future and the vision of those leaders that fought for our independence.

Our dream and vision shall come true - God willing.

The struggle for Aso Rock residency for the next four years ended, I assume, today February 28, 1999. I congratulate the winner, General Olusegun Obasanjo(Rtd.),and Chief Olu Falae for the competition they keenly pursued. It is very easy to stay at home and propound theories on how a looser should embrace a Winner as some People wrote to you, particularly in a competition passionately loved only to be lost, and more so when the looser feels that his loss was influenced by certain forces. There is no perfection in human affairs, therefore let us learn from what has happened and pray for prosperity and progress of Nigeria. The future of Nigeria does not rest on General Obasanjo alone but in the hands of the Legislators and the rest of us, both at home and in the diaspora. Fellow Nigerians

I wish to congratulate all Nigerians who went out to vote for Obasanjo and Falae. I am particularly happy that IGBOS and other Easterners voted for OBASANJO who deliberately refused to address the Problems of the IGBO PEOPLE. Igbos are the most democratically matured race in Nigeria. We shall now see what the general will do for IGBO PEOPLE. The world will be watching. I hope Obasonjo's supporters will advise him to end the marginalization of the IGBO PEOPLE. This is a people who can no more be treated as foreigners in their fatherland.

As for the loser - Olu Falae - there is no need crying over election rigging. Surely if thorough investigations are carried out, the APP must have equally rigged somewhere.

Obasanjo! Over to you! Salvage your country! Stop corruption! Begin with yourself! Prove to the skeptical Nigerians that you are in for a serious business and that you are not a stooge in the hands of the Military and the Hausa/Fulani Oligarchs! No time to waste!

First, I like to thank the Nigeria.com website for providing such a reliable and detailed account of the goings-on in the current political transition process in Nigeria. It provided up-to-date information to some of us who reside outside the borders of our motherland. More grease to your elbows!

More importantly, let me say a big CONGRATULATIONS to Nigeria on the successful conclusion of the presidential, as well as the earlier elections. This, I hope, would mark a turning point in the checkered political history of our home country and see us regain our pride of place in the comity of nations.

Another congratulations to Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo, on whose wisdom and experience Nigerians have chosen to rely to chart the country through the tempestuous waters of mismanagement. The General has an arduous task in front of him, and I hope that the lord Almighty would grant him, and his team, the fortitude to bear the cross.

Yet another congratulations to Chief Olu Falae, a man whose spirit and doggedness I have always admired, and constantly draw inspiration from. I thank him for being a part of this new dawn in Nigeria, by offering himself to be a servant of the people once again. A man who fights so gallantly is always a winner, even in defeat. I hope, and pray that he graciously accepts the election results for the sake of our great country. This is another chance for our nation to reclaim its lost glory, let us not jeopardise this opportunity.

Date:Sun, 28 Feb 1999 22:31:12 EST

As I begin to read the result of the presidential election of Nigeria, which President-elect Olusegun Obasanjo has won, two things came to my mind.

(1) That Nigeria can once again be democratic is a glory. Nigerian should remember the ordeal that we went through under the dictator Sani Abacha. Every Nigerian prayed for relief. Now that we have democracy, we should all come together to uphold it, play by the rules, educate ourselves, learn to accept defeats and move Nigeria on in the International arena. The situation at hand is not a perfect one, but it is far better than that of the military. Although, it is agreed that it is a transformation of the ex-military into civilian, nonetheless, we will be dealing with dialogue than military orders. We came a long way, yet there is longer way to go. Nigerians need to address many things, from restructuring of the nation, addressing the lack of many things; education, transportation, health, equal distribution of resources, and all other infrastructures, to respect for human rights. Only then can we overcome the ills that have plagued us for several years.

(2). The international observers in Nigeria confessed to the fact that there were voting irregularities in the presidential election. The victory of Obasanjo is not across the board. Obasanjo failed to deliver his home states, he was a military man backed by the heavy political machine and wealthy ex-generals of the North, he has been said to be a stooge of the ex-generals. All these are true. Obasanjo should now learn from the past, dedicate his leadership to correct some of the inequalities of Nigeria, set a reconciliation committee, unmarginalize the already marginalized, seek out ways to root out corruption in the society and return the nation to a true democratic state.

We should not now thing that the battle for democracy is over, it has just begun. Democracy is on a continuum.

Once again, I congratulate all Nigerians on the process we began and hope it will lead us to a true democracy.

I wish to congratulate General Olusegun for his apparent victory in saturday's presidential poll in Nigeria. Also may I congratulate Chuck Odili for giving us this web page and the opportunity to monitor events and results of the epic election.

May I appeal to the opposition leader and his supporters to be careful in their utterances in charging the "the election is a farce" and not accepting the result.

We must agree that there are imperfections in the voting and vote recording process in some areas, especially in places where observers could not reach. These problems must be expected in a large country like Nigeria with inadequate logistics(poor infracstructure) to do a perfect job.

International observers have confirmed irregularities in some places particularly Rivers state, but have also said these "abnormalies" should not detract from the effectiveness of the electoral process. Even if these areas vote are counted it would not stop the unassailable lead already established by Obasanjo. In Nigeria the opposition rig and manipulate the election process in their stronghold states only to complain of rigging when they are beaten in the rigging process inthe areas of the winner.

Falea and his group should be careful in thier utterances so as not to give the soldiers the excuse to stay on to power longer than the 29 May, 1999 they have agreed to leave for democracy to take root in Nigeria.

We are as current as if we were actually in Nigeria. May our country once again be great so that we can use our intelligence and knowledge acquired abroad in our fatherland - Amen.

What we need in Nigeria is a leader that will restore normalcy and bring about good government. Obasanjo is a Nigerian and I don't think it is fear to challenge his presidency based on the fact that he was once a military officer. It is unfortunate that he did not get support from his constituency. However, now that he is been elected to lead the country I think we should all ensure that he succeeds because he cannot do it alone. He needs the support of all Nigerians home and abroad.

May I use this opportunity to call on Olu falae to accept defeat and work with the elected president so that the country can forge ahead. Enough is enough. The Yoruba should not be seen as a clog in the wheel of progress. Nadeco, Afenifere, Yoruba peoples congress and a host of other Yourba groups should work with the elected president if actually they have the interest of the country at heart.

I, as a Canadian citizen of Palestinian origin, wish to congratulate Nigeria and the Nigerian people on this wonderful achievment. Nigerians have (again) chosen their president and finally it seems that the winner (Mr. Obasanjo) is likely to be sworn-in. Please, let us not forget chief Abiola, peace be on his soul, who I believe died for the Nigerian people.

On behalf of the Palestinian people, I thank you Nigerians for supporting us in the face of injustice. Our peoples have both suffered tremendously. Over the years, Palestininians saw their homes demolished, their lands confiscated, their religious practices opressed. Nigerians on the other hand fell victim to illegitimate military regimes who so quickly robbed their nation from its pride, turning it instead to a begger on his knees. In the west, the word "Nigeria" is generally attributed to oil, corruption, dirty slums, poor people, drug smuggling, scams..you name it. The challenge of changing the international community's attitudes (especially the investors), is extremely difficult, far more diffuclt than attaining a democratic Nigeria in my opinion. It will take years, proabably decades. But i'm sure we all agree that it is not an impossible task. Nigeria is not lacking in natural and human endowments.

Once again Nigeria has a chance to rise to glory. Palestinians needs a strong Nigeria because Nigeria has the potential to strongly contribute to correcting the imbalance in the global geopolitical situation.

I urge Nigerians everywhere to assist the Palestinian people in their quest to find peace, in their own independent Palestine, safe from occupation and economic dependence.

Once again congratulations and I shall congratulate you again on the 29th of May.

Chuck, this is a wonderful webpage. In fact, it is my preferred source for Nigerian news. Keep up the good work!

I need to congratulate you for putting up a very nice web site where Nigerains abroad can have access to information about what is going on.

I would like to say that the current election result is rather unfurtunate. I think Falae need to congratulate Obasanjo based on the spirit of sportmanship. However, it is very certain that the millitary has formed a cabal that is very hard to break in the Nigerian politics. They come and do coup and force themselves on us to rule. When, they step aside, they use public stolen money to buy themselves back to power. If i knew Obasanjo supported the former millitary leader, Ibrahim Babangida to annul Abiola's peaceful election only to pave way to be the now messiah that Nigerians want, i would say that is a disgrace to the whole Yoruba race. I think the blood of Abiola will continue to chase those who denied him the legitimate right to rule.

My great thanks to God on his intervention about the implementation of Nigeria's democracy. God is great!

Let us praise God who finally look upon us sinners -- out of all the pain and agony our people have been through ruled by ruthless and selfish leaders.

Many times I wonder why God has not intervened till this time. At a time, some of us believed God has left Nigeria. Praise be to God Almighty!

We Nigerians abroad should know we must join hands to help in both the technological and economical improvements of our country. If I did not learned anything in America for over 27 years I have lived out of Nigeria, I learned that Americans loved their country and they love to take care of their own. We too can do the same.

Let us remember, Obasanjo is not a president for the Yorubas alone, he is also the president to the Ibos, Ijaws, Shekiris, Hausas and of course the Yorubas too -- and ALL Nigerians. We should stop the egocentrism of ideological selfishness and embrace the heterogeneity of different ethnic groups in Nigeria.

When I interviewed the WhiteHouse and the US. States Dept. last week, from there I learned that President Clinton has a lot to do with the processes of the democratization of Nigeria. Because of this and other things he has done to support Black initiatives in this country, let us thank him greatly.

Nigerians, the pretty Black Lady is resurrected again! Let us put our differences aside and unite to build a nation that will captivate the praise of our children!

May God bless all of you from land to sea and to the green rain forest of Nigeria. God bless Nigeria and long live Nigeria's democracy.

Nigeria We hail Thee!!! Cheers! Cheers! Cheers!

Chuck, you have done a great job! More grease to your elbow and may the good lord present you with great energy to take this to another level.

I congratulate all my country people. It is nice we leaning towards a democratic government but at the same time, we have military men in uniform and those not in uniform. We have to be aware that those without Uniform will still act like military in uniform, the appearance does not matter. Lets all hope for the best since we all have to build this country together.

Long Live the federal Republic of Nigeria.

Subject:Why 2007?
Date:Sun, 28 Feb 1999 19:14:09 -0500 (EST)
From:"EJO"

I just read the comments made by my fellow Nigerians. Some of these comments made reference to 2007 A.D., but why 2007? I thought one term is 4 years. If Obasanjo won this election by malpractices, then as many have noted (without stating), he may most likely win again in 2003.

Here is what I want to say, if he won this time by malpractices, then THE FIGHT IS NOW, not in 2007. Those who put Obasanjo in today, will not hesitate to put in another of their kind come 2007. Honestly, how a person such as Obasanjo can win an election in any country, is discouraging.

So here is what we must do. Let the military step aside in May, then when we will start to challenge and make demands that can ensure that in 2003, Obasanjo and his "ventriloquists", not only lose, but if possible do not even bother to enter the race.

In regards to Falae. Falae has the right to challenge the electorial process, if he has proof that there were malpractices. Though, as some others have also noted, he should do it wisely. Maybe just enough to plant reasonable doubt within the Nigerian people and in the coming years, demand reforms and processes that can ensure that in 2003, what might have happened yesterday will have little or no chance in reoccurring.

Thank you Mr. Odili, for giving me an avenue to express myself.

ALUTA CONTINUA!

From:"Oyekanmi Nashiru"

Congratulations, Nigerians. Congratulations, President-elect Olusegun Obasanjo. Congratulations, Africa. Nigerians have spoken, a President has been elected and Africans the world over are proud again. That Olusegun Obasanjo has been preferred to lead the "house-cleaning" exercise for the next four years is very symbolic. Symbolic in the sense that the same man, then a serving military officer, handed over the leadership of the most influential African nation to a previously elected government about 20 years ago. Since then, the greater number of Nigerians have seen hell and the nation itself was almost going asunder. To the extent that most Nigerians saw last Saturday's election as the last card for Nigeria, the results from all the elections and especially, the presidential election, shows that Nigerians are willing to live together as one under a good government. The verdict is for political restructuring and economic reconstruction. A real transition government is about to begin, where unity is the watchword, and when the future of Nigerian nation would be properly defined. Call it a government of national unity that is mandated to convene a sovereign national conference. We never wanted the military to dictate the terms to us. Now, we have a constituent national assembly and an elected head of government. May God give the president-elect all the wisdom to form a government that would serve, not please. A government that would convince, not conquer.

As a first step, all Nigerians must rise up to accept the verdict and just give peace a chance. The political associations should begin real metamorphosis to political options with defined objectives and policies. The PDP should consolidate its gains while the alliance of AD and APP should move ahead to justify people's confidence in their coming together by beginning the process of merger immediately. Nigerians know who and who is with which of the two options available and they should be allowed to settle down where they have gone and actually belongs. Time was not on the side of everybody, the out-going military administration and the in-coming politicians alike. General Abubakar could not afford to stay longer and the politicians did not have sufficient time to consult widely for party registration. Nigerians had already given up before God paved the way for this opportunity. Selectively released or not, who could have thought that Olu Falae or Olusegun Obasanjo would be out of prison/detention to contest a presidential election by now ? The next few months should see the emergence of real political parties. AD, APP and PDP are still just convenient platforms with no clear cut policy objectives and direction. Let real-politic begins. Afterall, the house is not supposed to be cleaned only to be destroyed again.

To our local government councilors and chairmen, from whom most of the people's expectations would be fulfilled in the next four years, be prepared. To our various states assemblies legislators and governors, from whom most of the constituent nationalities expects leadership and inputs in the national discourse, remember the purpose for which you have been elected. To the national assemblies members ( senators and representatives alike) and Mr. President, Nigeria's fate is just being handed over to you to tinker and refashion to the best interest of the greater number of Nigerians, and for the greater respect of Africans within and outside Nigeria, to the greater glory of God.

Subject:Turning Point in Nigerian politics-the start of the process of RECYCLING EX-SOLDIERS IN NIGERIAN PRESIDENCY
Date:Mon, 01 Mar 1999 10:05:47 +1100

Congratulations on the obvious growth your "NigeriaWeb" whose excellent services I and many other Nigerians abroad have relied on to keep tract of the events in Nigeria. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for your position in the just concluded elections in Nigeria. I share a similar position. I also harbor a serious fear of the emergence of a different shade of military rule in Nigeria. The belief that Obasanjo's presidential bid (even that of Falae) was sponsored by the military (particularly ex-military officers) is strong and can almost be proven conclusively. Because of the enormous wealth of this class of Nigerians ( easily more than the wealth of about 75% of Nigerian whose votes can win you any election), this percentage of Nigerians (or their representatives ) can easily be bought over (again?) at the end of the term of office of the in-coming government to install the same (which is only fair if his performance in his first term was good) or another ex-soldier in Aso Rock and then several repeats of the same process in what amounts to recycling of military officers in government as ex-soldiers.

We will not have moved from where we are today if this eventuates, because the military class has nothing to show to justify their monopoly of government in Nigeria. Voters can be bought over easily because they are poor and and need the money which they are offered. The politicians and "militicians" know this. If an education campaign is mounted by those who can discern the injustice being done to the rest of us and future generations of Nigerians aimed at teaching the uneducated Nigerian people (not "illiterates") why we are not better than we are, the next twelve political years might turn out something close to what we will work with to advance the country in the direction of progressive improvement and not continuous backward slide.

Using your internet service to reach out to Nigerians and with the involvement of Nigerians all over the world, this education program (not aimed against anybody, group or political party) can be organized and executed. I don't know how you feel about this and Nigeria but I will like to know what you think. I am prepared to contribute in any manner towards this campaign and its success.

Thank you and long live Nigeria.

I wish I could say I share your enthusiasm on the Presidential election conducted this last Saturday, but I know I will be fooling myself. Personally, I don't know how well the election went because I am not in Nigeria to give it a true assessment, but if the reports I've read so far on the internet is anything to go by then it was a true free and fair election. However I must tell you that my grievance is not with the conduct of the election, but with the manner in how we got there.

When Abubakar came to power, he promised us that his government would be an open door policy, that he would release all political and human right victims prisoners, and that we would see a return to civilian government. Many would argue that so far he has fulfilled all his promises, but I beg to differ.

Chief Gani Fawehinmi, together with JACON members, approached the Head of State just as he came to power and proposed a government of Sovereign National Unity. This government would refocus the way Nigeria is presently ruled and the distribution of wealth. Evidence shows that the Northern part of Nigeria has unfairly dominated the ruling of the country without surrendering power to any Southerner, even when such Southerner had already being elected to rule the country. Nigeria derives the majority of its wealth from the South, mainly crude oil and cocoa, yet when the wealth is being distributed we see the North receives the bulk of the wealth, and the States and local governments that provides the wealth in the first place hardly get compensated. These were the grounds on which JACON asked the Abubakar government to allow Nigerians to address these issues before heading for the polls. There is no point in creating a civil government that would be burden with addressing all these issues when it comes to power. As these are sensitive issues, I believe that there would be continued chaos and unrest in the country as people would tell their representatives to demand and obtain what is rightfully theirs. Abubakar's response? He completely disregarded this proposal and said his objective is to hand over power to a civilian government. Next, human activities and well-informed concerned citizens asked Abubakar which of the numerous forms of government, and which of draft or used constitution that would be in place when the civilians take power. His answer? You bet, your guess as well as mine is as good as his. Nobody knows!! This is still after the president has already being elected!

After promising to release all political and human rights prisoners, he choose to free these people in batches, as he wished, to win propaganda warfare. The most important prisoner in his cell, MKO Abiola, was cajoled and persuaded to relinquish his mandate. After an unsuccessful mission, which included the invitation of Kofi Annan and Emeka Anyaoku to make Abiola change his mind, Abubakar choose the easy way out! He chose to eliminate! He chose to get rid of a difficult situation that was hindering his plans! He chose to kill Abiola! Now Abiola is dead, Abubakar can no longer free him because Abiola is now free with the Lord. Framed coup plotters are still being locked up, even with evidence indicating that Diya and his so-called accomplice never planned or are remotely connected with any attempt to overthrow the government of Abacha.

This now brings us to the transition program. We heard Abubakar say it so many times "I will retire when I hand over on May 29th", "I wish to usher in a civilian government on May 29th" and so on and so forth. I don't dispute him handing over power on May 29th, but the issue is what sort of government is he handing over? A government that has been battered and bruised! A government without a clear course of direction! A government of the military, for the people, by the military! No matter how many agbada and native attire Obasanjo wears, he is still a military officer in blood. How did Obasanjo win? He won simply because he is the only one the present and ex-military officers can trust. They know Obasanjo can never say he wants to probe any military officer or previous military administration because he has his own cupboard full of skeletons he doesn't want exposed. Looking back, how did Obasanjo afford to donate the Million dollar or so to his party just after being released from prison? He failed to answer this simply question simply because he knows it is from questionable sources. Here in America, you have to always disclose your source of donation for any political fund raising conducted. With this lack of accountable already exhibited, it is no wonder that Abubakar feels comfortable to hand over power. He is not handing the government to a civilian. NO. He is handing over to a military man clothe in civilian clothes.

Are congratulations in order at this stage? Once again, I beg to differ.

First let me extend fervent "Kudos" for your excellent web site loaded with links to everything Nigerian! You are a real credit to the motherland...keep it up!

About your open letter; I agree with you wholeheartedly...Mr. Falae should bow out in graceful defeat and be seen and heard to congratulate Obasanjo. He must do it for the country's sake, for once putting aside his personal (and may I say selfish inclinations?). His reported whining about a "farcical" election is an affront to all of us who wish our great motherland the very best. Falae ought to know better! Did his Yale training do him any good, in this regard?? Obviously not!

Like you said, there is always a next time. Our turn for certain comes in 2007. Lets put our collective heads together to make sure that the country is well and stable from today until then. Please, do NOTHING to give the soja-boys a reason (any reason) to stay one more minute. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!

I wish to state to whoever wins or loses, ( I have seen the trend of the result) should please work together to get Nigeria to lofty height so that the efforts, hopes and aspirations of our founding Fathers (and Mothers) would not come to nought.

Fellow Nigerians,

NigeriaWEB projects Obasanjo winner! Mr. Falae you fought for us, as a true son of Nigeria and we are grateful, be graceful in defeat.

NigeriaWEB wishes to congratulate all Nigerians at home and abroad, and well wishers everywhere, on this momentous occasion. We've come a long way! We have a longer way to go! Together we will surely reposition Nigeria to achieve its unparalleled potentials and reclaim its rightful place in the community of nations.

It is convincing that Obasanjo will emerge winner of this exercise to choose a true "transition president" to civilian rule. Let's give him this chance and come "2007" we the "New Breed Nigerians" will take over, for good.
