ou hear it all the time in churches and from pastors, and even Bible study teachers: "God is in control," and "He knows everything." Are these really Biblical? If the Lord God Almighty is in control of all events, activities, and people in the world, why are things so bad and evil is so widespread in the world today? Why is there so much poverty? Why are bad people thriving, and why are injustice, oppression, discrimination and inhumanity from man to man widespread in the world today? Would a loving, good and merciful Lord God Almighty allow the Holocaust, which some people even denied, and allowed Hitler and Mussolini to perpetrate all the atrocities in WW II? How could a beneficent and benevolent, caring and compassionate Lord God watch, while tyrants like; Caligula, Stalin, Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge, Idi Amin, Mobutu, Jean Bedel-Bokassa and the dictators of the world in past and our contemporary worlds inflict pains and sorrows on their people? If the Lord God is in charge of all people in the world, if He controls all human beings, why are all human beings not worshipping Him? If the voice of the majority is the voice of God Almighty, why did He free 2 million Israelites out of Egypt with the intention and plan to take them to the Promised Land, but only two-Joshua and Caleb-made it to the Promised Land? Even the great Moses couldn't make it! If everything that happens to every human being on earth has already been ordained by God, why then do we prosecute rapists and pedophiles? Why do we kill armed robbers and execute kidnappers; after all, God had already destined them to become armed robbers and kidnappers so there is nothing society can do about it. Why do we prosecute Charles Taylor, the perpetrators of the Rwandan Tragedy and kill Saddam Hussein and his henchmen?
Organized religion has not been able to answer many of such questions, and the inability of many Christians to answer these puzzling questions through the Holy Bible has frustrated genuine seekers of the Truth to give Christianity a wide berth. To many unbelievers, it appears God is weak, slow and at times, unresponsive to people's pains and so many have either concluded, He is weak or has lost control of the world, He is no longer in charge, or simply doesn't exist as the Atheists have said. Others have resorted to agnosticism by doubting the existence of a loving and merciful God, who watches helplessly while genocide, starvation, famine, rape, wars, school shootings in Columbine, Virginia Tech, Aurora, Newtown, and other atrocities occur. Those of us who preach the words of God have not adequately advanced sensible and well though-out reasons for all these happenings, but resort to mere obscurantism.
When we utter some of this gobbledygook and believe them, they offer us refuge from responsibilities. They allow us to shift blame to a loving and merciful God, who has endowed us with responsibilities and will also hold us accountable, if we shirk those responsibilities. When these inadequacies are wrapped inside deceptive spiritual religious beliefs; what Karl Marx, the magus of the materialist philosophers said about religion as the "opium of the masses and the poor" come to light. But the answers to all these puzzling issues are contained in the Word of Life, the Holy Bible. Yes, the Lord God Almighty is in control of the overall events of human history; and He, and He alone, knows the beginning to the end. He gave power, authority and dominion to Adam and Eve on behalf of Man-the human race-(Gen 1, 26 & 28). He created Adam and Eve, -and by extension you and I -with a Will-the main organ of the human soul that is the seat of decision as the Holy Spirit taught us last week (Read the explanation on the composition of the human soul again http://nigeriaworld.com/feature/publication/fayemiwo/012113.html.)
By allowing human beings to have free will, God Almighty chose to make Himself less assertive, and in the dark concerning the intimate things about each and every one of us. In other words, human beings are in charge here and are in control; however, we exercise our sovereignty over the universe, which is predicated on our acknowledgement of where our sovereign power came from; both the de facto and de jure sources of such sovereignty; from the Greatest Source; the Lord God Almighty. Would we use the tremendous power, authority and dominion that the Lord God Almighty gave to us as free moral agents to pursue His agenda on earth or not? This is the question that a Loving and All-knowing God wanted to know when He created Adam and Eve. The Lord God Almighty does not know what is in the heart of every human being, according to His Word, "Remember how the LORD your God led you all the way in the desert these forty years; to humble you and to test you in order to know what was in your heart, (emphasis mine) whether or not you would keep his commands." (NIV Deuteronomy 8: 2). Jeremiah 17: 10 captured this revealed Word thus: "I, the LORD, search the heart, I test the mind, Even to give every man according to his ways, According to the fruit of his doings" (NIV). The Bible in Basic English Version® explained it beautifully and plainly this way: "I the Lord am the searcher of the heart, the tester of the thoughts, so that I may give to every man the reward of his ways, in keeping with the fruit of his doings," (emphasis mine). Why would God search the human heart, if He already knew what is in the human heart? Why would He test us, if He already knew what our thoughts were anyway? Has it ever occurred to you to ask pastors and Bible teachers where they got the ideas from that the Lord God Almighty knows what is in every human heart and what are our thoughts are? When Christian teachers and pastors utter and teach such feel-good stuffs, we feel good indeed; and also because, those words are sensible to the human mind and palatable to the human ears, but are they really Biblical?
This is the answer to all the questions we asked at the beginning of this article above and other puzzling issues of life. Some Christians think they are belittling our Lord and Savior or portraying Him as a weakling, if we say He does not know what is in the human heart yet, that is exactly what the highlighted portions of Deuteronomy 8:2 and Jeremiah 17: 10 just disclosed. Every human being has the God-given power to bring out original thoughts and before the fall of Adam and Eve, they had the power to hold thoughts independent of God. So how does God Almighty find out what is in our individual hearts? It is by testing each and every one of us. That test is to find out whether we will obey or disobey Him, so He gives an instruction, or a set of instructions, a command or sets of commands. The evidence of loyalty is obedience, and the only way for the Lord God to know that we as human beings love Him as we profess every day is to prove it by our obedience so, God Almighty had to know that Adam and Eve really appreciated the power, authority and dominion He gave the human race. In order for God to know what is in your heart and my heart, He gives an instruction, a command or a test for us to prove we indeed love Him. Obedience leads to loyalty, loyalty leads to Trust and Trust is the practical demonstration of true and genuine love. Deuteronomy 13: 1-3 captures this reality in an unambiguous way thus: ""If a prophet, or one who foretells by dreams, appears among you and announces to you a miraculous sign or wonder, and if the sign or wonder of which he has spoken takes place, and he says, "Let us follow other gods" (gods you have not known) "and let us worship them," you must not listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer. The LORD your God is testing you to find out whether you love him with all your heart and with all your soul" (emphasis mine). There you have it in the highlighted portions. The Lord God Almighty tests every human being on earth, who has taken Him as Lord and Savior and it started with our First Parents: Adam and Eve (Gen. 2: 15-17). What then do we Christians mean as revealed by the Holy Spirit in His Word; the Holy Bible, when we say, God Almighty is in charge and totally in control? It simply means; whatever our response to God's test or instruction to determine our loyalty and obedience to Him, He can never lose a battle or lose control of events, and there is nothing Satan or his demons and human beings can do that will catch God Almighty by surprise. In other words, He has everything under control, because of His omnipotence, omnipresence and omniscient. He is the only One who has these three unique attributes among His numerous attributes and Awesomeness. So back again to some of the questions above; why does God Almighty allow evil, oppression, suffering, calamities, poverty, misery, injustice, etc. in the world today? He is not the One allowing it, but us-you and me- period. I want to give an illustration. In 1996 after I left Nigeria as a journalist-in-exile for Ghana as a result of the atrocities of the then military dictator of Nigeria, the late Gen Sani Abacha, (see this link http://nigeriaworld.com/feature/article/report1.html), I had an intense spiritual discussion with a popular pastor in Accra, Ghana on the events in Nigeria. During our discussions, I told him matter-of-factly that no military dictator would survive long in Nigeria, because Nigerians would not tolerate it and we would flush out the military tyrant in our country. He looked at me and asked how? I told him it was simple; genuine followers of and true sons/daughters of Our Lord Jesus Christ are plenty in Nigeria and we would enter into an intense spiritual warfare and Heavens would hear us and make a change. Two years earlier in an editorial in my paper titled: "Sani Idi-Amin Abacha of Nigeria? Not Here!" I explained that Gen Sani Abacha should know and understand that he would not survive a tyrannical ironfisted regime in a country like Nigeria with vibrant Pentecostal Christians and should see reason and restore democracy. Five years later, the man was gone.
Similarly, I met a pro-democracy advocate and one of the opposition leaders to the dictatorial regime of the late Mobutu Sesezeko of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC-formerly Zaire) in the Republic of Benin in 1996 and asked why the Congolese people tolerated that human wraith for nearly 40 agonizing years. He made some excuses and murmurs, so I asked him what his religion was. He said he was a Christian and I told him why couldn't the Congolese Christians used the power, authority and dominion that the Lord God Almighty gave them to remove the yoke of a fellow human being, who had reduced them to slaves and lobotomies. He said, oh God would remove him at God's time. But I made him to understand that the True Lord God Almighty didn't install Mobutu Sesezeko to treat them like slaves in the first place. He didn't get it. Many in the world today, including lamentably some Christians are like that Congolese man.
In any nation, society, clan, neighborhood, street, community, family, and in your life, the power, authority and dominion that God Almighty gave to Man that He brought forth on Creation Day (Gen 1: 26 & 28) are still available. However, ignorance and spiritual blindness of these awesome powers are responsible for the myriad of woes afflicting many people across the world today. Sadly, I must confess that many churches and Christians have contributed to these woes, but many too have also been responsible for bringing this Divine Light to many people across the world. But we lost the power, authority and dominion, albeit temporarily in Adam and Eve, but for the Grace and Mercy of the Lord God, we regained the power, authority and dominion later when God Almighty Himself came physically down to the earth to retrieve the power, authority and dominion, because of His Covenant Agreement with Man (not with Adam and Eve). This was why Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ Who gave the power in Gen 1: 26 & 28 came to earth, but He had to pay a heavy price, which we shall talk about more extensively in subsequent articles in this column. But for now, let's turn our attention to how Adam and Eve messed up at the beginning and how paradise was lost, albeit temporarily; and how Satan and his fiendish minions recorded their first victory, although a Pyrrhic victory at that, but nevertheless, victory all the same, after their defeat and annihilation in the heavens.
THE FALL OF ADAM AND EVE: In an earlier article in this column, I spoke about laws of heavens (Job 38 33), which the Almighty God rules by and with, and the same laws applied to Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Satan, who was once an archangel and other angels are bound by these laws and one of the laws, was obedience to their Creator (Ezekiel 28: 15). Adam and Eve too must also be made to obey this law of obedience as a demonstration of their love for their Maker, because God is a God of justice, even to Satan and his rebellious fallen hordes (Deuteronomy 10: 17, Acts 10: 34). Here was the instruction that the Lord God Almighty gave to Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden: "The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. And the LORD God commanded the man, "You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die," (Genesis 2: 15-17).
These instructions were clear and straightforward. The Lord God Almighty warned Adam and Eve on what not to do and if they flouted the instruction, He told them of the consequences. This Personality of the True Lord God Almighty permeated throughout the Holy Bible, and He still does today, because He doesn't change (Hebrews 13: 8). There is nowhere in the Bible that God instructed us not to do something without telling us of the consequences, if we violated His laws or instructions. In this scenario, Adam and Eve had two choices: obey or disobey the instruction of the Almighty God and believe or disbelieve the consequences of their disobedience, period. There is no middle road in this matter. As we go on in our subsequent articles in this column, we will discover this unique quality of our Awesome and Gracious God. He gives each and every one of His creation the latitude to obey or disobey Him, but nevertheless, He makes each and every one of us also understand the repercussions of our obedience or disobedience. That is why there is nothing known as destiny in the Holy Bible; as a matter of fact, the word: "destiny" appears only three times in the entire Bible. The Bible is a book of Decision: obey God, do it His Way and get rewarded with eternal life in His Presence in paradise; or disobey Him, do it your way and get punished in eternal hell, period. Those are the two choices available to every soul on earth and it started with Our First Parents; Adam and Eve.
Satan and his demons know the rules of the heavens, but they do not obey the rules but are nevertheless bound by those rules. That is why they are referred to as spirits of disobedience (Ephesians 2: 2 AKJV). They know that the Lord God Almighty exists and cringe at His Name, but they do not obey Him, nor respect Him but since they were defeated in heavens, Satan wanted Adam and Eve to join forces with him and his disgraced demons to continue the war here on earth. Since God and Satan are sworn enemies, whatever God says, Satan says the opposite. This is why any human being, who cares to know the modus operandi of Satan doesn't need to go farther than what has already been revealed in the Holy Bible. Pity those who say there is no God, because apart from Creation, which bears the unmistakable thumbprint of an Intelligent Being and Master Worker, the existence of Evil in the world confirms the existence of the Sovereign Lord God of both the heavens and the earth and all that are in them, Hallelujah! Satan is a creation of God Almighty so he doesn't have the power to initiate anything original, but only God Almighty can originate thoughts that are new and fresh since He is the First Cause. Satan has to wait until God makes a pronouncement, or gives an instruction, and as One who Opposes His Maker (2 Thessalonians 2: 4), he also gives his own announcement and instruction, which are contrary to that of God. When God says; "Yes;" Satan says; "No," and when God says; "No," Satan says; "Yes." It doesn't matter whether what God says makes sense or not to our limited human reasoning. Similarly, it doesn't matter too whether what Satan says is appealing or enticing. The rubric of ascertaining what is true or not is one litmus test: what does the Lord God Almighty say about this issue, period! Although Satan and his fallen angels had lost the war in the heavens, they still believe there is a battle to fight so, the continuation of their battle shifted to the earth as God purposed it. Here is Satan's announcement and instruction as rebuttal to God's announcement and instruction to Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden: "You will not surely die," the serpent said to the woman. 'For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil" (Gen. 3: 4 & 5)
Satan embodied himself into one of the lower animals; snake, which was supposed to be under the command of Adam and Eve and used the mouth of the snake to initiate a conversation in the Garden of Eden. During this time, Adam and Eve could converse with all the animals, although Adam and Eve were to lose this power and other powers later by God's intervention. From God's and Satan's statements/pronouncements, these oxymoronic consequences could not be mistaken. Satan repeated the same exact words that God Almighty used, but in inverted order. "You will surely die/not die; for you must not eat/must eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil; you will be like God." The last trick was what swayed Eve, to become like God, which Satan and his fallen angels tried to be in heavens and failed, but now he pulled the same tricks on Adam and Eve and it worked.
Satan and his demons achieved three things on that day, after Adam and Eve were tricked namely: Satan took control of the earth, because the two representatives of Man that God created; Adam and Eve chose to believe Satan and disbelieve God and ipso facto, all the power, authority and dominion that God Almighty gave to Adam and Eve henceforth passed unto Satan (Mathew 4: 9; 2 Corinthians 4: 4). By taking possession of the earth, Satan now has the power to re-construct the earth according to his convoluted views. He was not able to become God in heavens, but now at last; he and his fallen angels have now become gods on earth. Second, Adam and Eve must be punished, because, any of God's creatures who disobey God must be worshipped just as Lucifer and his hitherto loyal angels were driven from heavens, because of their rebellion, Adam and Eve too must also be driven from the Garden of Eden. Thirdly, God Almighty does not have the legal- moral rights to interfere in the affairs of Adam and Eve, but He has the legal-moral rights, which entitled Him to interfere in the affairs of Man. We have said it that God Almighty is a God of justice (Job 34: 12; Isaiah 5: 16) and cannot change the rules of the game mid-way. He has to do justice to both Satan and his angels as well and does not have the power to give Adam and Eve just mere slap on the wrist. Here was the position and submission of Satan, on behalf of his fallen angels to the Eternal Throne of God's Justice: "I and my angels fought against you in the heavens and we were defeated. We do not recognize you as God and we will not worship you. For rebelling against you in the heavens, you have driven us out of heaven and set a Day to send us to hell permanently from Your Presence. That is okay, but what of the human beings you created and gave the earth to? They rebelled against you and believed me. Adam and Eve disobeyed you; they didn't love you but loved me instead, because you told them they would die and I told them they would not die, which means they trust and love me more than you. The power, authority and dominion that you gave them now belong to me and if you must send my angels and I to hell, then all human beings who believe in me and disbelieve you are mine and where my angels and I go they must follow me/is there too."(Job 1: 9-11; Mathew 25: 41; Acts 13: 10; Revelation 20:10) That is not complicated, even a small child can grasp those words. How about you? Can you get it?
Next Week: Before we proceed to God's response and the punishment meted out to Adam and Eve for disobeying God Almighty, it is apposite to examine the artifices that Satan employed in the Garden of Eden that enabled him to seize control of the earth. This is very important, because this is the beginning of the evil that has enveloped the world today. You and I are paying a heavy price today, for the First Disobedience of our First Parents and that is why you and I are involved.
ISSUE OF THE WEEK: President Obama was sworn in last week for a second term as president of the United States. The glitzy razzmatazz that characterized the occasion, as it is by tradition seemed to eclipse an incident of spiritual epic proportions with eternal significance, although, the mainstream media, as usual, downplayed the incident. Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) and his inauguration committee initially invited Pastor Louie Giglio of the Passion City Church of Atlanta, GA to officiate at the august occasion. But because the tiny but powerful homosexual community in the Obama Administration didn't want to face the naked truth from Pastor Giglio on their abhorrent lifestyle, they fended-off a powerful lobby against the invitation and few days to last week's event, Pastor Giglio was dropped from giving the benediction. Here were the words of Pastor Giglio in the 1990s that incensed the gay community in Washington: "Homosexuality is not just a sexual preference, homosexuality is not gay, but homosexuality is sin. It can prevent people from entering the Kingdom of God and the only way out of a homosexual lifestyle, the only way out of a relationship that has been ingrained over years of time, is through the healing power of Jesus."
The Sovereign Lord of the heavens and the universe said in His True Words that He abhors a man sleeping with a man, and a woman sleeping with a woman. He says those who do so will never stay in the same place with Him (Leviticus 18: 22; Romans 1: 26-32). Pastor Giglio merely said what is contained in the unchangeable Word of the Creator. God Almighty described people like Pastor Giglio as men of integrity (Job 2: 3b). Brother Giglio, we salute you and pray that God Almighty will bless and strengthen you and raise up more like you, who will stand up for what is right ,although may not necessarily be popular in America and all over the world. When the eternal judgment is rendered, the faithful testimony of Pastor Giglio will be etched out in the heavenly memorials for eternity, but the Obama Administration and the traducers of the brethren would have been consigned to secularity history and forgotten.

Compliments of the day and season Dr. Fayemiwo. First, let me use this opportunity to say Happy New Year and wishing you and all members of your family good health, vigor and prosperity. I am glad to read from you again after a protracted silence. However, to be honest, I am surprised that you have now chosen to write religious articles about Jesus Christ and the Kingdom of God - instead of writing more political, economic articles about Nigeria and/or Africa or publishing more biographies of accomplished Africans. If you care to know my opinion, then I must tell you that personally, I just don't believe in this stuff or cock and bull story about one Jesus Christ, a Jew, sacrificing his life on the cross to save some black folks and that all you need to do in order to go to heaven is to give your life to him. Sorry, with all my respect to you, I really think that we have been brain- washed in Africa by these white folks and we are yet to learn any lessons from colonialism and slavery. I feel very sad that this is coming from somebody like you whom I consider to be well educated, exposed, and intelligent and hold in a very high esteem. I am hardly going to read your articles about Jesus Christ and Christianity. But, I will be very glad to read political and economic articles and more biographies - which I think are your calling and by so doing can touch more lives positively and help change our society for the better. Thank you Mr. Eluyera and sorry for replying late. I was planning to combine your letter with others with similar contents/issues that I have received until the Holy Spirit instructed me to reply you this week, and reply the others individually and I am complying with the Master. You see, I was once like you too and didn't want to have anything to do with one man they said lived 2,000 thousand years ago and a Jew, who came to the earth and claimed to be the Messiah. Not only that, they said he died for my sin and the sins of the world. I thought he didn't have to go all that far, because candidly, I didn't think I have sinned and at any rate, why die for my sins in the first place? You see, I believed in God or Nature; pick your choice, while I was growing up but wasn't quite convinced He is totally in control of events in the world. He is either ruling by proxy or somehow, He is taking all of us through a merry-go-round to amuse Himself. Although I knew about demonic forces, while I was growing up in Nigeria-you can't deny the existence of evil forces as a Yoruba man I am sure-but I thought those were parts of the features of Nature or God Almighty.
I was a member of an organized religion, while growing up in my native Nigeria, and the way and circumstances I lost my parents in my teens sent fears into me. By the time I was in my early 20s, I made up my mind to fortify my life so I would not be killed like my parents. I didn't know that no human being has the power to take another person's life. Of course, I operated within the fringes of satanic power such as; consulting with voodoo men and women; shaman or those we call "Babalawo" among the Yoruba- speaking people of West Africa, Islamic mullahs and deceptively demonic men and women operating Christian churches, but were actually working for the same fiendish forces of darkness. I thought those who called themselves "Christians," while I was growing up were also part of the whole chug of elaborate web of religious racketeering of spiritual forces in the world. Although there was an uncle, whose lifestyle made a lasting impression on me and I wanted to emulate him. He was an extremely rich Christian, but his lifestyle stood him apart. Now late, he had one wife in an environment of libidinous debauchery where the number of wives you had conferred respect, even when you couldn't take care of them. This peaceful and humble man lived a quiet life with his wife of nearly 60 years until he passed on at the old age of 82. I wanted to live like that man and so I began to search. I knew he had something that I needed, but somehow couldn't place my hand on that thing until I entered the University of Lagos, Nigeria in the 1980s.
My involvement in student union politics opened my eyes into the demonic part of politics at a smaller scale, which are dress rehearsals to the meta-demonic spiritual dimension of Nigerian politics, which incidentally you are asking me to engage in. Anyway, to cut the long story short, because my autobiography is on the way, I did not discover that Person who could give me that peace I craved and the rest of mind I wanted until 1997. Mr. Eluyera, this man who you called Jesus and that I shunned for 35 years while growing up and believed was a figment is indeed my Creator. He appeared to me and spoke to me on Friday February 14, 1997. It was not during the night, I wasn't dreaming, it was not a trance, I wasn't sleeping and I wasn't hallucinating, I wasn't drunk and I wasn't disoriented. This Jesus Christ is real; He revealed Himself to me and taught me how to read the Holy Bible. I cannot keep quiet and close my mouth to what I have seen and witnessed. The political writings you are asking me to continue to write are mere distractions. All the political accolades, pride of life, money, status, influence and prestige that you are asking me to promote have no eternal value. This Jesus Christ who I once doubted had shown me hell and gave me a glimpse of heaven. Mr. Eluyera, you and I will take nothing, absolutely nothing out of this world. We will all stand individually before this Jesus Christ, this Jew one day to render account of our individual lives. I am not stupid, I am a well-educated person by worldly standards but Mr. Eluyera; I can assure you that all these chains of university degrees are worthless the moment we close our eyes and pass on to the other side.
Do you now understand why I am using my writing talent to tell others about this Jesus Christ? Do you now understand why I am no longer interested in those political and earthly writings? Simple; because they will not matter and have no eternal dividends on that day when I appear before My Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
