Continued from Part 1
had for more than two years put notices in several locations on the land, that those farming on it should vacate it. Up till the time when work was to start, they were yet comply.
In pursuit of peace, I asked them to cost all the items on their different farms and I paid them in full.
With a poor job done by Osin, I had to employ others to uproot all the stumps on the land. I decided to use same farmers whose crops I had paid in order for them to make more money and to strengthen friendliness
One of them is Baba Ibeji; tall and lanky, with a figure of a soldier. I had it in my mind that after we were settled on the land, I was going to employ him as night guard.
We agreed on their wages for clearing the stumps. Baba ibeji requested that I gave them some mobilization fee. I handed to him most likely N10,000.00.
The following morning, I decided to follow them up by the phone to ask for progress on the work. Baba Ibeji did not report for work. Alas, he had disappeared with the money. I called him on his phone and asked him why he was not at site. His reply: "You have only used book wisdom, your wisdom is stupidity. I know you must have claimed a lot of money for the work yet you plan to pay us peanut" I asked him who I answer to, who was sponsoring the work. I further asked him if he was not the one who made the bargain on behalf of the others. I warned him before I hung the phone that no one cheats me without a retribution. I reported the case to his mates who advised me to ignore him as they were sure he was at a beer parlour. At such a time in the morning? I asked. I was so sad after few months to learn that he died; sad in the sense that I had no opportunity to witness Christ to him.
He met me sometime at the site with a plea that I gave him whatever job. I asked him to join the group that was uprooting the stumps. Afterwards, I gave him work from time to time. I did this completely out of compassion for him after I saw the deplorable house he was living with his wife and child.
In the 3rd quarter of 2012, I engaged him to uproot one particular type of shrub that proved stubborn on the field. He did a good job and I was impressed. But for one reason or the other, he could not complete the job, yet I paid him in full.
I afterwards travelled away to spend Christmas time with my family. By February after I returned, I called Sunday to return to complete his job. Knowing his situation and still out of compassion for him, I decided I was going to pay him extra money on daily basis for whatever number of days he worked. I thought he should be grateful for receiving money for the second time for the job he had earlier been paid fully. I did not know that my action was writing a story of a 'foolish squander mania' in his heart.
I gave him part payment for another job. After he did a bit, I gave him another part payment. After he completed the job, I paid him the balance. This behavior now confirms it to him that he must be dealing with someone who doesn't know what to do with his money.
On Sunday 19 May, I had seen him (Sunday J) in the Church vicinity, in work outfit and not Church's. I asked him if he came for the service, he said 'No' and I went my way in preparation for the service.
Then the surprise; a Pastor friend who I invited from Osun State to deliver the Sunday sermon reported to me after the service that there was a guy who was talking blasphemy that I owed him money and he had paid him what much he claimed I owed him. I was very annoyed, why he would succumb to 'blackmail tactics'. I asked him if he would ever believe that someone would work either for the Church or for me personally and I would not pay him having walked together since 1975.
In the evening, I determined to call John and I told him I left him with his conscience, if he had one. But as for me, He ate his last dinner with me.
