A JUMP INTO BEAR’S LAIR (POEM)

advertisement

s they play with sounds of words
in the kingdom of folly,
our desire for positive change is slain,
and the room I once tenanted
is no more mine.
Basic needs have become luxurious wants,
and no canopy exists
to offer shade from the heat of the day.

And with our woebegone faces,
and inaudible sigh of pain,
we walk past akara ball hawkers
for lack of purchasing cash.
Change, change, but a change
that follows the path of misery
is repugnant to reason
and dwarfs our national pride.

And as we watch
and listen with quiet mind
and humble hearts
we could divine the heartbeats
of the ferocious lion
running after its preys.
Yes, in order to dominate sheep
the dog must play upon their collective fear
of the wolves.

But nothing will survive injustice and error
but the penalty of their disorder.
With our hands spread heavenward,
we question how long
we have to dwell in this frightful silence
of the tomb
and enjoy the delight
of what seems to have
rivaled the heaven of Baccahentes.
