A TRIBUTE TO DR STELLA ADADEVOH AND HER COLLEAGUES (POEM)

nd the crux of the matter remains
that the foreign patient had the foreknowledge
that the deadly Ebola virus
resided in his biological system,
but dressed elegantly
like a respectable man
madness
dragged him to our shore.

In keeping with the dictates of her noble profession
the dedicated medical doctor,
attired in her medical paraphernalia
was poised to attend to her foreign patient
in order to restore hope and life.

In her close contact with her patient
and in her intent to stall his design to discharge himself,
an act that could have permitted him
to mingle with the crowd,
like a malevolent spell,
she, for whom the medical ethos was her personal creed
was brought down.

Do we not see in her death,
the epic of heroism?

Her life got expired
in her bid
to save thousands, if not millions of others
so plenty for ad hoc tenants
to our overcrowded morgue.

She did more than her duty
and sacrificed her life
to the good of others.

She lost herself in humanity!

And with her demise,
along with her colleagues,
we are still expecting a sunrise
where the day has refused to dawn
as the contours of our nation’s countenance
have been altered from glowing to gloomy mood.

And we have become a people
who dread each other with suspicion
and warm handshakes
have become a taboo,
and our land thrown into
a veritable vortex of nightmare scenario
as shocking tolls of more victims
surface on weekly basis.

The toll
could have assumed a hair-raising proportion
had the dead doctor granted Patrick Sawyer
his request to leave.
