BIRDS OF THE SAME FEATHER
- PATIENCE JONATHAN AND AYO FAYOSE

s the Nigeria nation is reeling in acute economic cum financial pain, we are also witnessing the unearthing of stunning hypocrisy among the so called elite. This unprecedented corruption in high places is not only repulsive but gives an insight into why the pain in the land is pervasive to the extent that it is accepted as the norm.

This piece is not for the petty purpose of being judgmental, but for the greater purpose of recognizing the perennial malady that is ailing our nation.

The most recent saga of the Siamese twins of Madam Patience Jonathan and Ayo Fayose proves the words of Colin Powel true, that this duo has no sense of shame. Their loyalty and love for the country has disintegrated into greed, demonstrated by deception and acute penchant for ill-gotten wealth.

As usual, rather than flesh out the source of their so called wealth, such that the Nigerian people will strain their mind to either accept or reject whatever legitimate or illegitimate explanation they could muster, they resorted to their ignorance and in their warped psyche, they have tried to pin the blame on either EFCC or President Buhari, which has no basis in common sense.

Remarkably, the unapologetic ground for carting away our common patrimony is mind boggling in that they believe that thievery is synonymous with achievement. Perhaps, they hold the notion that we are what we have. In most cases they probably believe they have a great life, in actual fact they live a miserable existence because their minds are tethered to mediocrity, thereby, they could not see the larger picture.

The most risible thing is their lack of practical grasp of the truth of their jaundiced vision, which explains why they could not see anything wrong in their action, the effect of which has emotionally brutalized the fabrics of our society. These two have evaluated and provided insight into their character; it is glaring for everyone to see what sort of human beings they are. They have practically ignored the vital point of emotional agony they have caused many families in our nation because of their greed.

Fayose, in his attention-grabbing style can't build a wall between his brain and mouth. He continues to spew out uninformed tirades and railing insults, cheap shots and distaste towards President Buhari with the notion that it will distract the nation from his stench. He should be reminded that his illegitimate reign will soon end and he will soon start to sing a different tune.

One can only speculate how sweet our world would be without these dangerous and perjured individuals whose hopes are only in this world of vanity, and according to the Scriptures in 1 Corinthians 15:19- If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable. These people and their ilk are the most miserable low lifers. These people are so dangerous to our country, and would continue to pose an existential threat to our nation unless we actively demand explanation from them on how they came about their ill-gotten wealth.

This writer can boldly assert that these two represent the microcosm of our society where no one dare to ask pointed questions about the questionable wealth of the so called big men and women in our society. We are so contented with them "forming" big men and women, like a Benin man would say. We are very much complacent as a people and continue to suffer in the midst of plenty simply because some knuckle head decided to be a smart aleck by changing the nuances of corruption.

One of the tragedies of our nation is that most of our people's minds are not matured, and they are not able to make connection between vital key principles that makes a human being credible and develop a nation, virtues such as integrity, honesty and forthrightness.

Secondly, most of our people do not understand how democracy works, for instance, they have elected officials at the state and federal levels, and no one really engaged them to ask tough and incisive questions. It is a known fact that the state governments receive monthly allocation from the federal government. Has anyone even bothered to ask the state governments about how they have expended these allocations? What exactly are they working on to alleviate the suffering of their teeming population? No, the focus has always been the Federal government which should not entirely be responsible for the profligacy of the state governor who lives like lords of a manor.

What must our people do in the interim? We must continue to encourage the current government led by President Buhari, in their effort to make the country livable for all of us and our children in the long run. The present hardship will not last long if we continue to remain focused and not be deterred by the temporary pain.

Also, our people need to be introspective and re-evaluate their values and adjust and be ready to speak the truth at all times, lies can only travel a few miles before the truth catches up with it. Let us begin to see dignity in our labor again. We must ask questions about contracts being issued to individuals and companies, citizens should take advantage of the Freedom of Information Act to scrutinize major contracts if they are commensurate to the work package. This is the major link to corruption in our country. Let us learn from Jonathan's debacle and seek no company of fools.
